eat BRITISH PLUMS

British plums are the last of the summer fruit, or the first of the autumn fruit depending on whether you are a glass half full or half empty kind of person. Whichever, they may not have the romance of a strawberry or the cheek of a cherry, but a perfectly ripe plum is arguably one of the finest home grown fruits we have. Enjoy while you can.

If you want to get culinary with your plums, then it is best to get French for your inspiration. In England we tend to stick to a boring plum crumble, or plum pudding that you then have to wait till Christmas till you can eat it. Clafoutis is a French recipe most commonly using cherries, but it works very well with plums, and is fruit cooked in a light batter – think plum toad-in-the-hole. It is stupidly easy and very worth the effort.
