In Part IV of our guide to sustainability, easy hacks to stay waste-free during even the busiest of days.<br/>You can see why Wham never sang that - it&rsquo;s not the catchiest of titles but it&rsquo;s a key way to live sustainably when you&rsquo;re out of the house; which most of us are, for most of the time!<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Having said that, we all know the New Year is a terrible time to make Resolutions (New Year&rsquo;s Zero-lutions?) as studies&nbsp;show <em>&ldquo;that these &ldquo;temporal landmarks&rdquo; cause us to take a big-picture view of our lives; what they don&rsquo;t show is that it does us much good&hellip;mainly the fresh-start effect makes for unrealistic expectations and therefore disappointment&rdquo;</em><br /> &nbsp;<br /> BUT given all the media attention at the moment on ocean plastics, plastic free aisles,&nbsp;, a possible &#39;latte levy&#39; and whether &#39;deposit return schemes&#39;&nbsp;will be making a comeback &ndash; I thought you could all do with a reminder about how easy it is to tackle Zero Waste &lsquo;On-The-Go&rsquo;.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> The issue comes down to the fact that the UK&rsquo;s recycling infrastructure was designed before the rise of all our On-The-Go&rsquo; consumption and now is groaning under the weight of it. The materials used for takeaway packaging are ever more complicated and un-recyclable. And the materials don&rsquo;t stay in the same place &ndash; if you take a coffee cup away then all the work that your caf&eacute; has done to source biodegradable packaging and provide the correct disposal, doesn&rsquo;t matter a jot if it ends up in a standard bin at your work. Furthermore, it&rsquo;s contaminated by food which complicates matters even more&hellip; Don&rsquo;t be under any illusion about this &ndash; almost all of your takeaway packaging is being incinerated, no matter how hard you try.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> <em>&#39;Our embrace of &#39;convenience&#39; and our acceptance of our inability to plan ahead is an entirely new way of thinking, and over the past seventy years we have built a new and different economic system to accommodate it&#39;</em><br /> &nbsp;<br /> So, we must tackle the problem at source and reduce first. I hate to say that it&rsquo;s as easy as 1-2-3 but it kinda is:<br /> &nbsp; <ol> <li>Just make the decision.</li> <li>Buy some kit.</li> <li>And try and stick to it.</li> </ol> &nbsp;<br /> Let me elaborate:<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Your starting point is to make the decision that you&rsquo;re going to try, as much as possible, to not use disposables &ndash; whether its water bottles, coffee cups, takeaway food packaging or straws. They&rsquo;re all avoidable if you decide in your head that&rsquo;s what you want to do. You don&rsquo;t have to be perfect; you will forget your reusable cup/ bottle/ container more than once, it&rsquo;s fine &ndash; just resolve to bring it the next time.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Once you&rsquo;ve made the decision that this is what you want to do, then get yourself some kit. You&rsquo;ll need (and lots of these are available in Planet Organic as they make a real focus on helping you use reusables in their shops &amp; caf&eacute;s):<br /> &nbsp; <ol> <li>A reusable water bottle &ndash; I like <a href="http://www.planetorganic.com/search/?term=kleen%20kanteen">Kleen Kanteen</a> which are stainless steel and fairly indestructible so will last for ages (the key when investing in any reusable product).</li> <li>A reusable coffee cup (e.g. a sturdy plastic/ glass one from <a href="http://www.planetorganic.com/search/?term=keepcup">Keep Cup</a>), or even a collapsible <a href="http://www.planetorganic.com/stojo-pocket-cup-black-355ml/27391/">Stojo</a> if you haven&rsquo;t got space to carry one.</li> <li>A lunchbox container is next and - once againstainless steel&nbsp;is brilliant as it&rsquo;s easy to clean and you can bash it around in your bag as much as you like.</li> <li>Finally &ndash; a small cloth bag for snacks &ndash; either ones you bring from home, or want to buy loose whilst on the go (snacks from&nbsp;<a href="http://www.beunpackaged.com/2015/03/full-product-list-unpackaged-at-planet-organic/">Unpackaged</a>&nbsp;at Planet Organic in Muswell Hill,&nbsp;Torrington Place and, from the 20th of Feb, from Westbourne Grove, for example)<br /> &nbsp;</li> </ol> Lots of Zero Waste blogs will tell you that you need to carry a reusable straw which I&rsquo;ve never found necessary &ndash; but the key thing is to ask for no straw when you order drinks out. Far too many places will add them in before you can say knife so you have to pre-empt!<br /> &nbsp;<br /> House your kit in a reusable shopping bag and you&rsquo;re good to go. Now you can start exploring all the brilliant businesses that are more than happy for you to bring your own &ndash; everyone wants your business so just explain to them what you&rsquo;re trying to do, and ask for their help to do so.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> A good thing to do is to think about how and where you usually buy these goods, and put your reusables in the place they need to be, to make your life easier. If you pop away from your desk mid-morning for a coffee then you need a coffee cup that lives at work. If you drink water on the commute, your water bottle lives at home. Just a little bit of thinking will make it much easier to achieve.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> And finally &ndash; some tips for when it goes wrong! Don&rsquo;t overload yourself. Start with the list above, even one would do (just choose the one you use most of to get the biggest impact) and then add in another idea when you&rsquo;re ready. Don&rsquo;t berate yourself if you forget; you will and it&rsquo;s not the end of the world &ndash; we all do. Ignore perfect #zerowaste social media posts which can be demoralizing as very few people are that perfect in real life.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> And make sure you ignore the naysayers &ndash; whether in your own family or work colleagues who tell you that one person&rsquo;s actions don&rsquo;t matter, they do. And if you get a bad reaction from someone in a shop or caf&eacute; &ndash; some people just don&rsquo;t get it, so explain it to them &ndash; they soon will. And if you can&rsquo;t convince them, take your business elsewhere.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> I like to be gentle in my blogs as I know that being angry won&rsquo;t help get people on the journey - I want you to feel empowered not overwhelmed. But when I look at the world, and see how hard millions of people&rsquo;s lives are, it reminds me how fortunate and privileged we are to be the 1% (you may not always feel it but globally, you really are). And when I think of the luxury of all the purchases listed above &ndash; I think, really, this is the least we can do. For me, the dinner table is a place where hosting friends and family is done with consideration, warmth, good humour and grace.&nbsp;<br /> <br /> I really hate to jump on the complain train, but winter is a hard slog. Or at least it can be, not only for your mind, but also your body. We binge, we indulge, we crave stodgy comfort foods to warm us up and get us through the January blues.&nbsp; Before we succumb to the depths of despair however, I&rsquo;m happy to share a quick and easy little recipe that can double up as a breakfast or midday snack, and is both warming, seemingly indulgent but gloriously healthy all rolled into one. It&rsquo;s a cosy, colourful and nutritious little number that takes inspiration from sunnier climates, a Moroccan inspired dish that is bursting with sunshine in all of its warming spiced glory. Here, I&rsquo;ve just spiced up a simple turmeric milk with an enriching blend of healing spices. At home, I have a blend of seven spices which I usually stir into my cup of tea to make an easy masala chai, the first recipe in my book in fact! but there&rsquo;s simple ways to spice up your brew, grating ginger, sprinkling a little pepper, adding a dash of cinnamon. So here&rsquo;s something you can easily make at home.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> 1 mug of almond, oat or any milk you prefer<br /> 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric<br /> 1 teaspoon grated ginger<br /> tiniest pinch of black pepper<br /> Generous pinch of cinnamon (and cardamom if you have it)<br /> 1-2 dates (or, if not blending the mixture, then use 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup or agave nectar)<br /> <br /> Boil together all these ingredients so that the flavour of the ginger really comes through, then blend together in a high-speed blender for extra froth and so that the dates and ginger get blended. If not blending then you can use brown sugar or any other sweetener as mentioned in the ingredients. Line a 20cm square (roughly) baking tin with greaseproof paper, use a little bit of oil in the tin before putting the paper in so it sticks neatly.<br /> <br /> 2. Place a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water, making sure the base doesn&rsquo;t touch the water.<br /> <br /> 3.&nbsp;Break 150g of chocolate into the bowl and allow it to melt, then set aside to cool slightly/place choc in a microwaveable bowl and give it short 40 second blasts in the microwave stirring each time until it melts.<br /> <br /> 4. Sieve the flour and cocoa powder into a large bowl, then stir in the sugar and a good pinch of salt.<br /> <br /> 5. Here are some strategies to help you navigate the party season.<br/><strong><span class="f-large">Play the long game</span></strong><br /> It may well be inevitable that you will overeat at some points over the festive period, but rather than try to refrain from enjoying a celebratory meal or snacks, try to play the long game. If you know you have a big dinner or party, plan around it by trying to attenuate your eating either before and/or after. People that are good at maintaining bodyweight are naturally good at compensating for over indulgencies by moderating in subsequent meals, often unconsciously. Remember, it&rsquo;s calories in and out that matters most and it doesn&rsquo;t matter if you have your whole daily intake in one meal or over several meals, if on average you are not eating too much. &nbsp;<br /> &nbsp; <div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.planetorganic.com/form/?page=1"><img alt="" src="http://www.planetorganic.com/images/articles/Form%20-%20AM.jpg" /></a></div> <strong><span class="f-large">&nbsp;<br /> Intermittent fasting</span></strong><br /> Intermittent fasting is another strategy gaining popularity and one you may want to consider. For example, having a longer period of not eating after a big meal out. You could follow a similar pattern to a time-restricted eating, such that you are only eating 8 hours of the day, and not eating the other 16. Or simply wait longer until you next eat. There is some good evidence to suggest that extending the period of not eating is actually better in terms of helping us cope with what we eat and evidence also that after fasting for 16 hours you actually eat less than otherwise in the later meals.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> <span class="f-large"><strong>Exercise clever</strong></span><br /> Make a plan to exercise and set some goals, even if these are a bit more relaxed than your regular ones. Don&rsquo;t write off exercise for the whole of December thinking you&rsquo;ll double up in January. Consider doing some of that exercise on an empty stomach. Exercising fasted, or without any newly consumed carbs, helps your body utilise more fat. So perhaps a morning moderate intensity exercise (e.g. walk, run, cycle) may be a good way to help burn off some fat.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Exercise is also of potential benefit in helping to regulate your appetite and curb hunger.&nbsp; Both in terms of a distraction from eating and as a way of helping you compensate for overindulgences.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> If you are a frequent exerciser, you may also consider higher intensity exercise such as HIIT training. This exaggerates the effect of exercise both in terms of calories burnt, fat burning and appetite control. But it’s come to my attention that Christmas is nearly upon us and everyone probably needs some help with getting through the festive season without totally trashing the planet!<br/>There&rsquo;s a few ways to look at Christmas &ndash; either a hellish consumer-fest that we spend too much money on, buy too many things that we don&rsquo;t need whose forced jollity is horrible for people who are having a hard time. Or it&rsquo;s a magical time spent with friends and family, eating lovely food and not going to work. The truth for all of us is probably somewhere in the middle.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> We like a bit of thought provoking stuff so where better to start than with an article <a href="http://www.monbiot.com/2012/12/10/the-gift-of-death/#.WddO-ywu_t9.facebook">questioning the whole of the consumerist Christmas construct</a>; or how we can&rsquo;t buy our way out of trouble because <a href="https://qz.com/920561/conscious-consumerism-is-a-lie-heres-a-better-way-to-help-save-the-world/">conscious consumerism is a lie</a> and how <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/oct/30/to-cure-affluenza-we-have-to-be-satisfied-with-the-stuff-we-already-own">the only way to cure us is to be satisfied with what we already own</a> which is down to changing the culture &amp; messages we receive!<br /> &nbsp;<br /> The reality is that we can&rsquo;t ethically consume our way out of climate change &ndash; we need to drastically reduce the amount of (in Gerald Ratner&rsquo;s words) cra*p we are all implored to buy this side of December. Joke toys are no joke when the impact of their production lingers far longer than the 30 seconds enjoyment on opening.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> So, what to do (now that I&rsquo;ve put the weight of the world on your shoulders?!) Below is a set of practical tips to make your Christmas this year more sustainable. Some of them are easier, some of them harder to implement but try and do something. Whilst I agree with the article above that there&rsquo;s no substitute for systemic change, I do think that individual actions have a wider ripple effect so do as much as you can this year, and a little more next year &ndash; that&rsquo;s how change happens.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> <span class="f-large"><strong>Changing your Family&rsquo;s Culture</strong></span><br /> This is obviously the ideal but might be too much of a stretch to start with &ndash; so think of this as the ultimate goal. This lovely salad is inspired by a Kylie Kwong recipe.<br/>It is high in health-protective carotenoids&nbsp;from both the veggies and the egg yolk and makes a great shared plate as part of a meal.<br /> <br /> <span class="f-mediumlarge"><strong>Ingredients - serve 4</strong></span> <ul> <li>&frac12; large celeriac, peeled</li> <li>1 beetroot (beet), peeled</li> <li>1 carrot, peeled</li> <li>150 g (5&frac12; oz) large radishes (approx 4&ndash;5)</li> <li>4 large eggs</li> <li>1 large handful chives, cut into 5 cm (2 in) batons</li> </ul> <br /> <em>Creamy miso dressing</em> <ul> <li>&frac14; cup (60 ml/2 fl oz) brown rice vinegar</li> <li>1 large egg yolk</li> <li>1 tablespoon white (Shiro) miso paste</li> <li>1 teaspoon tamari</li> <li>2 cm (&frac34; in) knob of ginger, peeled and finely grated</li> <li>1/3 cup (80 ml/2&frac12; fl oz) light-flavoured extra-virgin</li> <li>olive oil</li> <li>1 teaspoon sesame oil</li> </ul> <br /> <strong><span class="f-mediumlarge">Method</span></strong><br /> To make the creamy miso dressing, place the brown&nbsp;rice vinegar, egg yolk, miso paste, tamari and ginger&nbsp;in a medium bowl. Line a brownies tin with some baking paper. Place all the ingredients for the base in a bowl and mix well. You should have a quite solid, sticky dough. If it&rsquo;s too dry add a splash of almond milk.<br /> With your fingers press the dough in the tin until it&rsquo;s evenly spread.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> 2. Place the tin in the freezer to set while you are making the filling.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> 3. Drain and rinse the cashews and place them into a blender with all the other ingredients. Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Remove the tin from the freezer and pour the cashew cream on top of the base. Smooth it out with a spatula or the back of a spoon.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> 4. Place the tin back in the freezer to set for at least 1 hour.<br /> &nbsp;<br /> 5.
