Livia's Kitchen have gotten us all excited and ready to spring into summer - via the kitchen - with this caramel-y, peanut butter-y, biscuit-y nice-cream slab!
Summer’s finally here and we want to spend our days eating ice-cream! This one’s got a chewy peanut layer, a smooth peanut butter nice-cream and is topped with chopped up Nugglets. This recipe is the perfect way to use up those bananas that have been in the fruit bowl a little bit too long. Simply chop them up and put them in the freezer ready to become a delicious peanut nice-cream.

Bottom layer
100g pitted Medjool dates (10 dates)
30ml maple syrup (2 tbsp)
60g oat flour (1/2 cup)
40g roasted peanuts (1/4 cup)
A pinch of salt

Peanut butter nice-cream
250g peeled and frozen bananas (in pieces)
280g peanut butter (1 cup)

Topping
4 packets of your favourite Nugglets

1. To make the bottom layer: mix the dates and maple syrup into a paste using a food processor.

2. Add the oat flour, salt and peanuts and mix until the peanuts have broken down into small pieces and the mixture has formed a dough.

3. Place the dough in a lined tin (20cm x 10cm) and press it down until a smooth layer covers the base of the tin. Then, put the tin in the freezer while you make the nice-cream.

4. For the nice-cream: take out the banana from the freezer and leave it to defrost for 5 minutes.

5. Put the banana in the blender together with the peanut butter and blend until you have a smooth nice-cream (scrape down the sides if necessary while making it).

6. Get the tin from the freezer and pour your nice-cream on top.

7. Chop up the Nugglets and sprinkle them on top of the nice-cream until it’s completely covered. Leave to set in the freezer for 2 hours.

8. Take the ice-cream out of the freezer 5 minutes before serving and cut it up into slices and enjoy! Store in an airtight container for 3-5 days in the freezer. 0 Adaptogens in Focus: Ashwagandha http://www.planetorganic.com/adaptogens-in-focus-ashwagandha/ http://www.planetorganic.com/adaptogens-in-focus-ashwagandha/#comments Mon, 11 Jun 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /adaptogens-in-focus-ashwagandha/ As part of Adapto-June we are going to focus on several adaptogens that are of particular interest for those of us who live in hectic cities such as London. As part of Adapto-June we are going to focus on several adaptogens that are of particular interest for those of us who live in hectic cities such as London. This week: Ashwagandha Unwrapped, with a little help from our friends at Wunder Workshop!
As part of Adapto-June we are going to focus on several adaptogens that are of particular interest for those of us who live in hectic cities such as London. Adaptogens are organic plants, roots and mushrooms that quite literally help the body to adapt to physical, environmental and emotional stress - all of which, most of us can certainly identify with. This is not some faddy new concept either, but rather, as is usually the case with health, an old concept based on traditional medicines with Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, South American and Russian roots. Whereas the Western world’s approach to medicine is centred on curing disease, the ancient medicine from the aforementioned cultures focuses far more on identifying your personal constituency and using herbs and food to increase longevity, boost health and enhance your mood, to prevent diseases and support overall wellbeing.

Ashwagandha root (also known as Indian Ginseng) is one of these ancient roots that is categorised as an adaptogen. It is popularly known as the ‘king of Ayurvedic herbs’ and is classified as a rasayana (life extender). In Ayurvedic medicine it is commonly prescribed to lower stress, anxiety, for its anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic compounds, which was found useful in clinical cases of Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis, especially in combination with turmeric. One of the most relevant studies is on its ability to reduce adrenal fatigue and stabilise thyroid hormones by lowering cortisol levels (the hormone released in stressful situations). When our cortisol is increased on a chronic basis, aka we are constantly stressed, it can lead to a variety of other issues such as depression, high blood sugar, suppressed immunity, low libido, hypertension and weight gain just to name a few. Introducing some of these adaptogens into your daily routine, can be a small investment towards supporting your overall wellbeing in the long run.

When it comes to taking Ayurvedic herbs, and in this case Ashwagandha, make sure you take it in a polyherbal combination with synergizing herbs and spices, and prepare it with a healthy fat (such as coconut milk) which will help to increase its bioavailability. The Golden Balance blend, for example, is a unique blend of organic Ayurvedic herbs and spices designed to support us in our stressful modern lifestyles, manage cortisol levels and balance hormones. As well as containing Ashwagandha it also benefits from turmeric, liquorice and ginger which have powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, whilst cayenne pepper stimulates metabolism and circulation, revitalising and rejuvenating the body. In our society’s hectic lifestyle where our bodies and hormones are constantly put to the test, Golden Balance helps to maintain your balance day in day out.

· Chandrasekhar K1, Kapoor J, Anishetty S., 2012, “A prospective, randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of safety and efficacy of a high-concentration full-spectrum extract of ashwagandha root in reducing stress and anxiety in adults.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23439798
· Biswajit Auddy, PhD1*; Jayaram Hazra, PhD2; Achintya Mitra, MD2; Bruce Abedon, PhD3; Shibnath Ghosal, PhD1, 2008. “A Standardized Withania Somnifera Extract Significantly Reduces Stress-Related Parameters in Chronically Stressed Humans: A Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study”.
· Narendra Singh, Mohit Bhalla, Prashanti de Jager,* and Marilena Gilca, 2011, “An Overview on Ashwagandha: A Rasayana (Rejuvenator) of Ayurveda” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3252722/

Written by Zoe Lind van’t Hof – Wunder Workshop 0 Black Bean Chocolate Protein Balls by Biona http://www.planetorganic.com/black-bean-chocolate-protein-balls-by-biona/ http://www.planetorganic.com/black-bean-chocolate-protein-balls-by-biona/#comments Fri, 08 Jun 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /black-bean-chocolate-protein-balls-by-biona/ Chocolatey, protein-packed and containing a not-so-secret fibre rich ingredient! All month long we'll be show-casing the incredible power of adaptogens across all our departments; from Health & Body Care, to our Salad and Hot Dish Bar and brand new Wellness Bar!
This June we’re putting adaptogens on the pedestal they deserve and celebrating them across our stores.

Why? Well adaptogens are a pretty amazing group of foods & herbs. To be classed as an adaptogen, herbs must be; non-toxic to the body’s physiological functions, offer widespread support and help bring the body back to equilibrium. They have been used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for centuries, but we are just rediscovering how amazing they can be.

Adaptogens essentially set about creating balance in your body by supporting your hormonal system. One of the most amazing things about them is that whilst they all have their own broad functions, they work with your body and adapt their function to your body’s specific needs.
Some support your energy levels, such as maca. Others can reduce your stress levels, such as ashwagandha or as with ho shou wu, even boost your sex drive.

Adaptogens come in many different forms; pills, tinctures or powders. You can mix them into a smoothie, your morning coffee or mix them into your food.

On our food and drink counter this month we have made it even easier for you to get to know adaptogens by creating some special dishes. Making it as easy as ABC & D for you to include them in your diet…..

Ashwaganda Toasted Seeds….we’ve toasted linseeds & pumpkin seeds with tamari and ashwagandha for a stress busting addition to your meal. Through regulating cortisol (your body’s stress hormone) ashwagandha can help to lower stress levels.

Buzzing Beet Houmous….our adaptogenic take on our food counter staple. We’ve combined our houmous with beetroot and an energy boosting blend of ingredients; baobab, maca, guarana & ginseng. Both ginseng and maca can help to reduce fatigue, without any caffeine come down.

Cashew & Supergreens Pesto Portobellos…we’ve given our plant box favourite a make over for the month. Into the cashew & kale pesto we’ve added; maca, kelp, cacao, hemp, spirulina, chlorella, lucuma and barleygrass. Again you’ll be benefitting from the energy boosting qualities of maca (as well as all the great stuff from the greens!)

Drink…you can also drink your adaptogens this June. We are giving everyone who purchases a drink a FREE Wunder Workshop Golden Shrooms booster. We’ll combine this straight into your drink for you. This great blend includes the mushrooms reishi and cordyceps. Reishi can improve your immune response while cordyceps have long been used to improve physical performance & as an aphrodisiac.

Come in store this June to try our new adaptogenic food and drink and let us know what you think!
0 Baked Peanut Butter & Raspberry Pots http://www.planetorganic.com/baked-peanut-butter--raspberry-pots/ http://www.planetorganic.com/baked-peanut-butter--raspberry-pots/#comments Weds, 23 May 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /baked-peanut-butter--raspberry-pots/ Vegan & Gluten Free Sweet Delights from Livia's Kitchen Vegan & Gluten Free Sweet Delights from Livia's Kitchen
The baked peanut butter and chocolate pots from my book make us go crazy in the office so we decided to make a summer version of it. Irresistibly good!

Serves 4

400-g/14-oz can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp lemon juice
2–3 tsp ras-el-hanout spice mix (depending on how spicy you want them)
1 tsp flaked sea salt

Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6.

Put the chickpeas in a bowl and add all the remaining ingredients. Stir well to coat.

Tip the chickpeas into a roasting pan and spread out into an even layer. Make sure all the liquid goes in too, as the lemon juice will evaporate and leave a lovely tangy flavour on the chickpeas.

Pop in the preheated oven and roast for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir everything around well, then return to the oven for another 10 minutes.

Serve warm or allow to cool in the pan, then pack into small food bags in individual portions.

This recipe is from The Squirrel Sisters' brand new book: Naturally Delicious Snacks & Treats which is available to buy on Amazon.
0 Black Forest Trail Mix http://www.planetorganic.com/black-forest-trail-mix/ http://www.planetorganic.com/black-forest-trail-mix/#comments Tues, 22 May 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /black-forest-trail-mix/ An easy peasy grab-and-go snack recipe, brought to us by Squirrel Sisters! So awesome, we think that it deserves its own month. Welcome to Matcha May!

We’ve created 3 delicious specials to celebrate matcha and help you to power your body with green energy.

When most people think of matcha, they think of a creamy matcha latte or, for the hardcores, a simple matcha tea. This May, we want to show you that matcha isn’t just for hot drinks, it is an incredibly versatile ingredient that can be used in smoothies or shakes and even baking.
The rule that all green food is good for you definitely applies to matcha. It is rich in polyphenol compounds called catechins, which are a type of antioxidant. The levels you find in matcha are considerably higher than in normal green tea. Not only that but matcha contains a dreamy combo of caffeine and L-theanine. This gives you a great energy and mental clarity boost but prevents the typical caffeine crash a couple of hours later.

If you’re new to matcha or already a convert, try our specials this May and celebrate the magic of matcha with us!

Matcha Mylkshake: an indulgent, creamy vegan shake made with coconut mylk, banana, Booja Booja vanilla ice cream and MATCHA.

Sourdough Matcha & Almond Cookie: one for all you vegan cookie monsters out there. A spelt & almond sourdough cookie with coconut. Sweetened with coconut sugar and elevated with a blend of wheatgrass, chlorella, spirulina, green tea and MATCHA.

Matcha & Raspberry Muffin: a matcha recipe for the more traditional eaters out there. Anything with chocolate and peanut butter makes us go mad in the office and it’s safe to say that this recipe was a success! The brownie is super chewy because it isn’t baked and the peanut butter fudge is soft. We sprinkled on some Biccy Boms and Nugglets* for extra indulgence. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Makes: 8 squares

Brownie base
15g melted coconut oil (1 tbsp)
75g maple syrup (1/4 cup)
50g ground almonds (1/2 cup)
15g cacao powder (2 tbsp)
35g buckwheat (1/4 cup)
A pinch of salt
Peanut Butter Caramel
215g smooth peanut butter (3/4 cup)
15g coconut oil (1 tbsp)
150g maple syrup (1/2 cup)
A pinch of salt
Toppings
Whole peanuts
Raisins

For the brownie: mix the melted coconut oil, maple syrup, ground almonds, cacao powder, buckwheat flour and salt into a paste.

Put your brownie in a lined tin (20 cm x 10 cm) and press it down, make sure that the surface is even. Keep it in the freezer while you make your peanut butter caramel.

For the peanut butter caramel: put the peanut butter, maple syrup, coconut oil and salt in a pan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. When the coconut oil has melted use a whisk and whisk until everything’s combined. When your fudge reaches a boil let it boil while you whisk for about 3 minutes and then it’s done.

Pour your fudge on top of the brownie and sprinkle on some chopped peanuts and raisins. Keep it in the freezer for 30 minutes to an hour, until the fudge is completely cool.

We chose to use some extra toppings (because this is definitely a case where more is more!) so we sprinkled on some Biccy Boms and our new product Nugglets* when they were out of the freezer.

*Nugglets coming soon, to a Planet Organic near you!
0 Pump up the Plant Protein with Motion Nutrition http://www.planetorganic.com/pump-up-the-plant-protein-with-motion-nutrition/ http://www.planetorganic.com/pump-up-the-plant-protein-with-motion-nutrition/#comments Tues, 03 Apr 2018 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic /pump-up-the-plant-protein-with-motion-nutrition/ Introducing our limited edition protein menu featuring Motion Nutrition’s roasted peanut vegan protein powder. Get on board with this Swedish tradition by rustling up the stack of gluten free & vegan waffles by one of our favourite ladies in the free-from treats game.
With Waffle Day coming up towards the end of the month, Livia’s Kitchen figured a delicious waffle recipe is in order! The recipe is super easy to make and the perfect treat to share with your friends and family. The texture of these gluten-free waffles is great because of the chewiness that you get from the ground almonds and the arrowroot really helps holding everything together. We know it’s all about the toppings so go all out with dairy free ice-cream, jam, sauces and other treats!

This recipe makes one big Belgian waffle.

Ingredients:
1 cup Rebel Kitchen Whole Dairy Free Mylk (245g)
1 ½ tbsp coconut oil (23g)
1 tsp apple cider vinegar (3g)
½ cup oat flour (65g)
1 cup ground almonds (100g)
1 cup buckwheat flour (140g)
A pinch of salt
1 tsp arrowroot powder (5g)
¼ cup coconut sugar (40g)
1 tsp cinnamon powder (2g)

Method:
Put the coconut oil and coconut milk in a pan and melt it on a low heat. Once it’s melted take it off the heat and add the apple cider vinegar, mix and leave to the side.

Mix the oat flour, ground almonds, buckwheat flour, salt, arrowroot powder, coconut sugar and cinnamon powder in a bowl. Add the wet ingredients and combine everything.

Heat up your waffle iron and add the mix. Check it every now and then and once it’s coloured and crispy it’s ready.

Top it with your favourite toppings! We used Booja Booja vanilla ice cream, chocolate Biccy Boms, homemade cherry jam and homemade salted caramel sauce.

0 Introducing Planet Special..Coconut Oil Matcha http://www.planetorganic.com/introducing-planet-specialcoconut-oil-matcha/ http://www.planetorganic.com/introducing-planet-specialcoconut-oil-matcha/#comments Thurs, 01 Mar 2018 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic /introducing-planet-specialcoconut-oil-matcha/ You’ve all heard of our coconut oil coffee; combining espresso, butter and coconut oil for a fat fuelled, great start to the morning. Now we’ve given our matcha latte a coconut oil makeover.
Combining ceremonial grade matcha green tea powder with coconut oil and butter this is a matcha latte taken to the next level.

All you matcha lovers out there already know why you drink it…its packed full of antioxidants in distinctly higher levels than normal green tea. Matcha contains caffeine, so you’ll still get the energy boost you get from your coffee but, importantly, it also contains L-theanine which alters the effects of the caffeine. This means you get all the good stuff but it helps you avoid the energy crash that you often get a while after your coffee.

This drink isn’t all about the matcha; the butter and coconut oil are really important too. The key component here is the fat content of the butter and oil. Fat makes you feel fuller for longer, so starting the day with a dose of healthy fats will help you through to lunch without reaching for a snack. Fat also slows down the absorption of carbohydrates which helps to reduce insulin spikes and maintain a more consistent blood sugar.

All in all, we think this is a pretty great new drink! Combining the benefits of matcha tea along with healthy fats will give you a great boost at any time of day.

The Coconut Oil Matcha will be available at all of our stores throughout March and April. If you would like yours vegan, just ask our team. 0 Bee Energised Energy & Focus Juice http://www.planetorganic.com/bee-energised-energy--focus-juice/ http://www.planetorganic.com/bee-energised-energy--focus-juice/#comments Thurs, 22 Feb 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /bee-energised-energy--focus-juice/ Boost your brain power with this speedy concoction from UnBEElievable Boost your brain power with this speedy concoction from UnBEElievable

Most of us tend to feel run down, tired & experience brain fog from time to time (if not much of the time!). In a blender, blitz together the Tea Biscuits with the almond butter until the mixture starts to hold together.

2. Press the biscuit mixture into a pie or quiche tin that has a loose base. Using this type of tin will make it a lot easier to remove the pie before serving. Pop the base into the freezer to set while you make the filling.

3. Melt the chocolate in the microwave until silky and smooth and allow to cool slightly. Blend the melted chocolate together with all the remaining ingredients for the filling until thoroughly combined. You may need to scrape down the sides of the blender a few times as you go.

4. Remove the tart crust from the freezer and spoon the filling into the tin, smoothing as you go until you have a nice even chocolatey layer. Freeze for at least an hour, or until ready to serve.

5. Remove the tart from the freezer and allow to defrost slightly before topping with the flaked almonds and crumbled Sweet ‘n’ Salty Chocolate Bars. Remove from the tin and cut into slices – as big as you like! Enjoy as it is, or serve with berries for a bit of added sweetness.

Recipe brought to us by Rhythm108

0 COMPETITION WINNER: Emma Gill's 5 Ingredient Pancake Stack http://www.planetorganic.com/competition-winner-emma-gills-5-ingredient-pancake-stack/ http://www.planetorganic.com/competition-winner-emma-gills-5-ingredient-pancake-stack/#comments Weds, 14 Feb 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /competition-winner-emma-gills-5-ingredient-pancake-stack/ We teamed up with Macacha in a quest to find the best pancake recipe in the land and we finally have our winner! @fruitsandroutes wowed us with her 5 ingredient Macacha protein pancakes which are vegan, gluten free, and contain no refined sugar, to boot! In Part IV of our guide to sustainability, easy hacks to stay waste-free during even the busiest of days.
You can see why Wham never sang that - it’s not the catchiest of titles but it’s a key way to live sustainably when you’re out of the house; which most of us are, for most of the time!

Having said that, we all know the New Year is a terrible time to make Resolutions (New Year’s Zero-lutions?) as studies show “that these “temporal landmarks” cause us to take a big-picture view of our lives; what they don’t show is that it does us much good…mainly the fresh-start effect makes for unrealistic expectations and therefore disappointment”

BUT given all the media attention at the moment on ocean plastics, plastic free aisles, , a possible 'latte levy' and whether 'deposit return schemes' will be making a comeback – I thought you could all do with a reminder about how easy it is to tackle Zero Waste ‘On-The-Go’.

The issue comes down to the fact that the UK’s recycling infrastructure was designed before the rise of all our On-The-Go’ consumption and now is groaning under the weight of it. The materials used for takeaway packaging are ever more complicated and un-recyclable. And the materials don’t stay in the same place – if you take a coffee cup away then all the work that your café has done to source biodegradable packaging and provide the correct disposal, doesn’t matter a jot if it ends up in a standard bin at your work. Furthermore, it’s contaminated by food which complicates matters even more… Don’t be under any illusion about this – almost all of your takeaway packaging is being incinerated, no matter how hard you try.

'Our embrace of 'convenience' and our acceptance of our inability to plan ahead is an entirely new way of thinking, and over the past seventy years we have built a new and different economic system to accommodate it'

So, we must tackle the problem at source and reduce first. I hate to say that it’s as easy as 1-2-3 but it kinda is:

Just make the decision.

Buy some kit.

And try and stick to it.

Let me elaborate:

Your starting point is to make the decision that you’re going to try, as much as possible, to not use disposables – whether its water bottles, coffee cups, takeaway food packaging or straws. They’re all avoidable if you decide in your head that’s what you want to do. You don’t have to be perfect; you will forget your reusable cup/ bottle/ container more than once, it’s fine – just resolve to bring it the next time.

Once you’ve made the decision that this is what you want to do, then get yourself some kit. You’ll need (and lots of these are available in Planet Organic as they make a real focus on helping you use reusables in their shops & cafés):

A reusable water bottle – I like Kleen Kanteen which are stainless steel and fairly indestructible so will last for ages (the key when investing in any reusable product).

A reusable coffee cup (e.g. a sturdy plastic/ glass one from Keep Cup), or even a collapsible Stojo if you haven’t got space to carry one.

A lunchbox container is next and - once againstainless steel is brilliant as it’s easy to clean and you can bash it around in your bag as much as you like.

Finally – a small cloth bag for snacks – either ones you bring from home, or want to buy loose whilst on the go (snacks from Unpackaged at Planet Organic in Muswell Hill, Torrington Place and, from the 20th of Feb, from Westbourne Grove, for example)

Lots of Zero Waste blogs will tell you that you need to carry a reusable straw which I’ve never found necessary – but the key thing is to ask for no straw when you order drinks out. Far too many places will add them in before you can say knife so you have to pre-empt!

House your kit in a reusable shopping bag and you’re good to go. Now you can start exploring all the brilliant businesses that are more than happy for you to bring your own – everyone wants your business so just explain to them what you’re trying to do, and ask for their help to do so.

A good thing to do is to think about how and where you usually buy these goods, and put your reusables in the place they need to be, to make your life easier. If you pop away from your desk mid-morning for a coffee then you need a coffee cup that lives at work. If you drink water on the commute, your water bottle lives at home. Just a little bit of thinking will make it much easier to achieve.

And finally – some tips for when it goes wrong! Don’t overload yourself. Start with the list above, even one would do (just choose the one you use most of to get the biggest impact) and then add in another idea when you’re ready. Don’t berate yourself if you forget; you will and it’s not the end of the world – we all do. Ignore perfect #zerowaste social media posts which can be demoralizing as very few people are that perfect in real life.

And make sure you ignore the naysayers – whether in your own family or work colleagues who tell you that one person’s actions don’t matter, they do. And if you get a bad reaction from someone in a shop or café – some people just don’t get it, so explain it to them – they soon will. And if you can’t convince them, take your business elsewhere.

I like to be gentle in my blogs as I know that being angry won’t help get people on the journey - I want you to feel empowered not overwhelmed. But when I look at the world, and see how hard millions of people’s lives are, it reminds me how fortunate and privileged we are to be the 1% (you may not always feel it but globally, you really are). And when I think of the luxury of all the purchases listed above – I think, really, this is the least we can do. Perhaps that thought might help push you over the line.

Happy #reusing and I’ll be back next month with ideas for reducing waste in your home.

0 Moroccan Inspired Cinnamon Spiced Chia Pots with Fig and Pistachio Crumb http://www.planetorganic.com/-moroccan-inspired-cinnamon-spiced-chia-pots-with-fig-and-pistachio-crumb-vegan/ http://www.planetorganic.com/-moroccan-inspired-cinnamon-spiced-chia-pots-with-fig-and-pistachio-crumb-vegan/#comments Weds, 31 Jan 2018 00:00:00 GMT Guest /-moroccan-inspired-cinnamon-spiced-chia-pots-with-fig-and-pistachio-crumb-vegan/ I have been working in the events industry for a decade, but hosting a memorable dinner or event is in my blood. My family are an eclectic bunch of creative, passionate and colourful personalities and for as long as I can remember we have gathered over hearty and lengthy meals to laugh, support, bicker, confide and celebrate. For me, the dinner table is a place where hosting friends and family is done with consideration, warmth, good humour and grace.

I really hate to jump on the complain train, but winter is a hard slog. Or at least it can be, not only for your mind, but also your body. We binge, we indulge, we crave stodgy comfort foods to warm us up and get us through the January blues. Before we succumb to the depths of despair however, I’m happy to share a quick and easy little recipe that can double up as a breakfast or midday snack, and is both warming, seemingly indulgent but gloriously healthy all rolled into one. It’s a cosy, colourful and nutritious little number that takes inspiration from sunnier climates, a Moroccan inspired dish that is bursting with sunshine in all of its warming spiced glory. I am more than confident that this recipe will restore you with, if not the joys of Christmas, at least the promise of Spring. Here, I’ve just spiced up a simple turmeric milk with an enriching blend of healing spices. At home, I have a blend of seven spices which I usually stir into my cup of tea to make an easy masala chai, the first recipe in my book in fact! but there’s simple ways to spice up your brew, grating ginger, sprinkling a little pepper, adding a dash of cinnamon. So here’s something you can easily make at home.

1 mug of almond, oat or any milk you prefer
1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoon grated ginger
tiniest pinch of black pepper
Generous pinch of cinnamon (and cardamom if you have it)
1-2 dates (or, if not blending the mixture, then use 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup or agave nectar)

Boil together all these ingredients so that the flavour of the ginger really comes through, then blend together in a high-speed blender for extra froth and so that the dates and ginger get blended. If not blending then you can use brown sugar or any other sweetener as mentioned in the ingredients. Then simply sieve into a mug (or leave the ginger pieces if you like to chew them) and drink.

ABOUT MIRA MANEK
Mira Manek is giving Indian food a facelift, making it lighter, brighter and healthier with her cookbook Saffron Soul and her sell-out Indian supperclubs, feasts and yoga brunches in London. Who would have thought that just 6 ingredients could come together to make such a dreamy cookie? In this recipe we use a combination of naturally gluten free buckwheat flour and ground almonds to achieve the perfect soft texture. The saltiness from the peanuts balances perfectly with the sweet dark chocolate making them so delicious. We really struggled to have just the one each when we first made them in the Livia's Kitchen office!

Ingredients

2 cups Ground Almond -250g

½ cup Buckwheat flour -75g

½ Tbsp coconut oil – 10g

¼ cup peanut butter – 55g

¼ cup Maple syrup – 70g

½ cup Raw chocolate – 105g

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and line a tray with baking paper.

Add all of the ingredients (excluding the chocolate) into a bowl and stir until fully combined. Fill your freezer with organic berries and chopped bananas, pots of leftover curries, stews & soups, and most importantly, ALWAYS keep the leftovers – they are truly the most wonderful base for the next meal, all you need to do is add some fresh salad leaves, or a pile of pea pasta, some hot roasted tomatoes, a slathering of olive oil, some paprika & a dash of cumin, maybe even a slice or two of avocado or an egg – and hey presto you’ve got yourself another yummy dish which you’ve created.

Incorporating healthier and real food habits can only have a positive impact on our health; experimenting with new veg, difference cuts of meat, funky pastas, foraged herbs and multicoloured foods can be so exciting and they are often so easy to prepare, they can brighten up our kitchens and our cooking, plus, and perhaps even more importantly, they improve the overall health of our gut microbiome. Instead of restricting yourself and thinking too much about what you are, or are not, going to eat set easy goals, for example eat more veggies, or rather eat at least 5 different veggies and 2 pieces of fruit a day. Other ideas include having more wholegrains over white or processed carbs and having a chunk of good quality dark chocolate, some fruit & a spoonful of nut butter instead of a sugary pudding. We’ve used 10% CBD Oil to create London’s only CBD oil coffee.
Combining espresso, butter, coconut oil and CBD oil, our new coffee is a seriously upgraded version of our coconut oil coffee.

CBD is a cannabinoid derived from hemp. It has been proven to have a therapeutic value but is non-euphoric unlike certain strains of cannabis. CBD’s list of reported benefits include; anti-depressive, anti-anxiety, sleep aid, muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory.
Our CBD coffee contains 5 drops of 10% CBD oil. This is half your entire daily recommended intake as a supplement.

This limited edition coffee will be available for January and February only, so get it while you can!

In January, we’re making several other changes to our drinks menus. First of all there are all our new charcoal drinks which you can read about here.

Secondly we’re keeping some (less Christmassy versions) of the favourites from our Seasonal menu. Our vegan hot chocolate, made with real dark chocolate buttons, moves onto our main menu. We’re also keeping our chai latte and dirty chai speciality coffee. A significant reduction in Vitamin D, harsh central heating indoors and bitter cold air outdoors can result in dry, flakey and pretty dull complexions all round, as well as cracked lips and brittle hands. As the days get shorter and your knitwear game gets stronger, the change in season is also a great time to update your beauty routine and ensure your skin is well looked after during these crisp months. Here are our top tips on surviving the chill!

Mask it!
A face mask is a fantastic way to provide skin with a much needed nourishment kick, acting as an intensive treatment to skin suffering from winter climates. Skin tends to dry out during the winter as it acclimatises to the drop in temperature and humidity, so it’s best to opt for a hydrating and moisturising mask. Face masks are super easy to whip up at home and we’d recommend using ingredients high in essential fatty acids, vitamins A and C and antioxidants - all of which will help to promote hydrated, rejuvenated and glowing skin. Think avocados, bananas, grapefruits and honey. Non-abrasive or gentle exfoliators are also a great way to slough away dry and flakey skin, leaving behind fresh and bright complexions! Oats are a super-gentle option, as well as yogurt or milk that are naturally high in exfoliating acids.
Our favourite recipe is super simple:

1 tablespoon oats

1 teaspoon yogurt

1 teaspoon honey

OPTIONAL: 1 teaspoon BYBI Detox Dust

The addition of Detox Dust will not only help brighten with ingredients like ginseng and papaya, but will also help to draw out toxins and impurities. Mixed with the super moisturising honey and exfoliating oats/yogurt, skin will be soft, supple and glowing!

Invest in a great oil
Oils are a fantastic way to moisturise skin as they have a great ability to penetrate and truly hydrate. The cold climate can encourage the skin’s natural oils to decrease, breaking down the natural moisture barrier. Even if you ordinarily suffer from oily or combination skin, the right oil can help to actually hydrate the skin whilst balancing and helping to stop overproduction of sebum. Investing in a great face oil or serum will ensure that your skin is kept soft and healthy even in the depths of winter. We’d recommend looking for the following ingredients, or just investing in a bottle of these oils and applying straight to the face!

Normally dry skin: Squalane is a wonderfully nourishing oil that has the ability to absorb almost instantly. It’s a great antioxidant which means it’ll help promote skin cell rejuvenation, helping to rid of particularly dry or flakey skin. BYBI’s Supercharge Serum contains large amounts of squalane and makes for the perfect nighttime corrective treatment.

Normally oily/combination skin: Jojoba oil is a fantastic way to balance out typically oily or greasy skin. It’s similar in structure to sebum, so helps to stabalise and stop the overproduction, whilst also hydrating.

Sensitive skin: Calendula oil is an incredibly soothing oil that’s perfect for sensitive or irritated winter skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties that will help calm and smooth, whilst also being high in Vitamins B and C which will brighten and nourish. BYBI Beauty’s Babe Balm has calendula as its base and is perfect for sensitive skin types.

Don’t forget about your body
It can be easy to get swept up in making sure your winter skincare game is on point and forget about the skin on the rest of your body! Hands, feet, legs, elbows and knees also suffer from dry central heating, a lack of sunshine and bitter winds. Whilst you may not be flashing the flesh in the depths of winter, there are a couple of quick ways to ensure your body stays baby-soft and well nourished! Here’s how:

A bath soak is a great way to nourish from head to toe. It’s easy to throw together a homemade recipe using Epsom Salts and your favourite essential oil (we like lavender). Mix together and decant into a bath before you get in. The salts are the perfect way to detox whilst soothing brittle skin and the lavender moisturises and calms.

Exfoliating a few times a week is the best way to budge dead skin cells and promote new, supple skin. We love using ground coffee and coconut oil - it literally takes two seconds to whip up and provides an incredibly moisturising scrub that will perk up dull skin and deeply moisturise all over.

Shop their products 0 Cranberry Orange Smoothie http://www.planetorganic.com/cranberry-orange-smoothie/ http://www.planetorganic.com/cranberry-orange-smoothie/#comments Weds, 20 Dec 2017 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic /cranberry-orange-smoothie/ Need a delicious way to use up those leftover cranberries? With Christmas fast approaching it might well be a period you worry about too many big meals and parties to keep your fitness goals on track. But life is about living and occasional overindulgence within reason can be managed. Here are some strategies to help you navigate the party season.
Play the long game
It may well be inevitable that you will overeat at some points over the festive period, but rather than try to refrain from enjoying a celebratory meal or snacks, try to play the long game. If you know you have a big dinner or party, plan around it by trying to attenuate your eating either before and/or after. People that are good at maintaining bodyweight are naturally good at compensating for over indulgencies by moderating in subsequent meals, often unconsciously. Remember, it’s calories in and out that matters most and it doesn’t matter if you have your whole daily intake in one meal or over several meals, if on average you are not eating too much.

Intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting is another strategy gaining popularity and one you may want to consider. For example, having a longer period of not eating after a big meal out. You could follow a similar pattern to a time-restricted eating, such that you are only eating 8 hours of the day, and not eating the other 16. Or simply wait longer until you next eat. There is some good evidence to suggest that extending the period of not eating is actually better in terms of helping us cope with what we eat and evidence also that after fasting for 16 hours you actually eat less than otherwise in the later meals.

Exercise clever
Make a plan to exercise and set some goals, even if these are a bit more relaxed than your regular ones. Don’t write off exercise for the whole of December thinking you’ll double up in January. Consider doing some of that exercise on an empty stomach. Exercising fasted, or without any newly consumed carbs, helps your body utilise more fat. So perhaps a morning moderate intensity exercise (e.g. walk, run, cycle) may be a good way to help burn off some fat.

Exercise is also of potential benefit in helping to regulate your appetite and curb hunger. Both in terms of a distraction from eating and as a way of helping you compensate for overindulgences.

If you are a frequent exerciser, you may also consider higher intensity exercise such as HIIT training. This exaggerates the effect of exercise both in terms of calories burnt, fat burning and appetite control. And contrary to belief does not make you more hungry.

Eating clever
To help you manage the festive period you may want to look at what you are eating and when. The festive period is conducive to eating luxury/tasty foods that are often high in one or more of fat, sugar and salt, even on a vegan diet. In addition, you are often eating and drinking more at some meals than normal (e.g. Christmas lunch), and eating and drinking later in the evening (e.g. your office party).

Try to therefore to moderate the types of foods you eat across the day. For example:

• Don’t eat high carb foods at every meal, perhaps have either a low carb breakfast and/or low carb dinner.
• If eating and drinking late at night, try to make these low carb meals. Favour lower carb drinks such as red wine and spirits with sugar-free mixers.
• If doing exercise, try to refrain from having lots of carbs before the exercise, or immediately after exercise if you can, to maximise the effect of the exercise.
• Try to base most meals around a good source of protein and vegetables predominantly.

Hopefully, these strategies will help you navigate the party season in good health and arrive in January ready for new challenges. Never feel guilty about enjoying yourself and above all, have fun and a great Christmas!

Damian Soong - CEO, Form, formnutrition.com
Form is a range of plant based nutrition built around the belief we can be the greatest version of ourselves while being mindful of others.

Protein Mocha - by Shona Vertue

Ingredients

1-2 shots of espresso

2 scoops of form nutrition vegan protein powder

1,5 cups Plenish almond milk

Method
Pour hot coffee and protein into a blender. This month’s blog was meant to be about being Zero Waste when you’re on the go. But it’s come to my attention that Christmas is nearly upon us and everyone probably needs some help with getting through the festive season without totally trashing the planet!
There’s a few ways to look at Christmas – either a hellish consumer-fest that we spend too much money on, buy too many things that we don’t need whose forced jollity is horrible for people who are having a hard time. Or it’s a magical time spent with friends and family, eating lovely food and not going to work. The truth for all of us is probably somewhere in the middle.

We like a bit of thought provoking stuff so where better to start than with an article questioning the whole of the consumerist Christmas construct; or how we can’t buy our way out of trouble because conscious consumerism is a lie and how the only way to cure us is to be satisfied with what we already own which is down to changing the culture & messages we receive!

The reality is that we can’t ethically consume our way out of climate change – we need to drastically reduce the amount of (in Gerald Ratner’s words) cra*p we are all implored to buy this side of December. Joke toys are no joke when the impact of their production lingers far longer than the 30 seconds enjoyment on opening.

So, what to do (now that I’ve put the weight of the world on your shoulders?!) Below is a set of practical tips to make your Christmas this year more sustainable. Some of them are easier, some of them harder to implement but try and do something. Whilst I agree with the article above that there’s no substitute for systemic change, I do think that individual actions have a wider ripple effect so do as much as you can this year, and a little more next year – that’s how change happens.

Changing your Family’s Culture
This is obviously the ideal but might be too much of a stretch to start with – so think of this as the ultimate goal. But seriously, can you do things differently in your family? We now do a (not so) Secret Santa. Everyone buys one gift for someone else, drawn out of a hat. Everyone still gets one really-nice present but it makes it all a bit more restrained and we just focus on spending the day together.

Replacing Gifts with Experiences
Instead of buying a thing, why not offer an experience – vouchers, a day out, sharing a skill (babysitting vouchers go down a treat, hint hint!), be creative and think about the best experience you could offer someone – the gift of time, in our frenetic world, is a rare thing indeed.

Or could your gift help someone else? There’s a wealth of charity gifts so why not have a think about what the receiver loves & buy something that fits – my Mum helped me set up Unpackaged, so one year I passed it forward by making a donation in her name helping women set up micro businesses in the developing world, she loved it.

And what can you make yourself? The internet is awash with ideas – Pinterest is probably your best friend BUT only make things that people want – we’re not replacing ill-conceived shop bought items with terrible home-made stuff here people!

If you do need to buy gifts then can you support small, independent creative businesses? The UK is a nation of shop keepers after all so – on the high street, or online – support a small business who will have put their heart and soul into designing your present and it will be much better because of it.

And remember, if you’re giving any gifts that involve batteries – invest in a rechargeable set and remember to charge them up before the day!

It would be a bit miserly to get rid of all vestiges of Christmas so here’s our list of swapping out bad for better in the home:

The Tree (& Wreaths)
The debate rages on between real vs. artificial trees (which are ultimately reusable). Some companies have tried to rent them but we’ve never managed to find a viable one (we wish Paul a speedy recovery!). If you have the time/ energy, you could make this amazing pallet Christmas tree or just decorate up a pot plant. But if you are going to buy one - the science shows that both real and artificial have an impact so if you’re buying real, make sure it comes from a responsible grower, if you’re buying artificial, buy well and reuse it for years and years to get the best value out of the plastic used.

Decorations
Once again, Pinterest is amazing for those who have time. How’s about some fun kids ideas? popcorn garlands, homemade paper snowflakes etc. If you don’t have that much time, then focus on the box of baubles you already have, it’s all about decorating with friends and family, not whether it matches this year’s tree at Claridges. And Christmas fairy lights – remember when your Dad would go through and check each bulb?? You can still do that, reuse & repair, do not buy new cheap lights!

Advent Calendars
More plastic, more things you don’t need, but all kids (and big kids like us) love an advent calendar.
Options here - buy or make a reusable advent calendar, another a great activity with kids or how about a reverse advent calendar where you donate to your local food bank? If you still need a chocolate one – go Organic & Fair Trade – and if you don’t know why, watch The Dark Side of Chocolate.

Stockings
Now this is something to invest in – everyone remembers the stocking they had as a child! You can go all Martha Stewart and make your own or buy a delightful one off an independent designer, they’re everywhere at the moment.

Crackers
Crackers seem to be EXTREMELY important to my family but if I get another set of mini nail clippers… so this year we’ll be getting the ultimate in reusable crackers, made in York, although these from Asos are mostly recyclable and very cute.

Cards
Your best bet here to be super eco is to go digital and donate the money to charity. But it’s hard if, like us, you want to take the time to put pen to paper to distant friends, which is a beautiful thing. So, you could make your own from scrap (yes Pinterest again) or buy charity cards.

Wrapping Presents
Old paper – newspaper, pages from design magazines, reused wrapping paper that your gran insists on carefully flattening each year – this is where it’s at. Forget Pumpkin Spiced Lattes….this Christmas we are bringing you clean, organic speciality hot drinks to indulge in.
These drinks are all available in all our stores from the beginning of November through until Christmas.

Hot Chocolate: made from organic, dark chocolate buttons and hazelnut milk, our hot chocolate is vegan. Creamy and indulgent without the sugar rush, it is a simple combination of these 2 ingredients.

Red Velvet: for those who want to take their hot chocolate to the next level. We’ve added beetroot juice to our classic vegan hot chocolate to create our red velvet. The creaminess of the chocolate combines well with the earthiness of the beetroot for a less sweet taste.

Chai Latte: a classic and something we’re often asked for in our stores. Classic chai spices with our own twist…we’ve combined these with Tigernut Milk. The newest milk on the block is naturally sweet & creamy with a rich and nutty flavour. We think is compliments the spices perfectly.

Dirty Chai: all Aussies will recognise this name but it may be a bit unfamiliar to us Brits. The Dirty Chai gives a caffeine kick to our classic Chai Latte with an added shot of espresso. Try it instead of your morning latte.

Charcoal Latte: a newbie onto our main speciality menu…the black latte. Not as ominous as it sounds, a creamy combo of charcoal, coconut nectar and coconut milk. Charcoal is known for its detoxifying properties so it’s a win-win; delicious drink with benefits.

Check out our hot drinks menu

0 Raw rainbow salad with soft-boiled egg and creamy miso dressing http://www.planetorganic.com/raw-rainbow-salad-with-soft-boiled-egg-and-creamy-miso-dressing/ http://www.planetorganic.com/raw-rainbow-salad-with-soft-boiled-egg-and-creamy-miso-dressing/#comments Weds, 15 Nov 2017 00:00:00 GMT Guest /raw-rainbow-salad-with-soft-boiled-egg-and-creamy-miso-dressing/ This lovely salad is inspired by a Kylie Kwong recipe.
