If like us, your fingertips and toes are looking a bit neglected in lockdown, then Glossworks is here to help.
Glossworks’ nail polish range is never tested on animals and contains no animal products or any of the usual harmful chemicals found in nail varnish like formadehyde, toluene, DBP, camphor, paraben, xylene, ethyl tosylamide and lead.

Set the Scene

Put on your favourite playlist, make yourself a drink, light a scented candle and change into comfortable clothes.

Fill up two large bowls - one for hands and one for feet - with warm water, adding bath salts to help soften the skin. Get comfortable and immerse your feet in the foot bowl.

Prep Hands

While your feet are soaking, it’s time to prep your fingernails. If nails are long, use nail clippers to trim, then shape gently with a nail file into the desired shape. Once you’re happy with the shape, place your fingertips into the finger bowl and soak for four minutes.

Sit back and enjoy the sensation of the warm water.

When the four minutes is up, remove your now-softened fingertips and very gently push back the cuticles, clipping away any loose cuticle with cuticle scissor. Be careful not to damage the cuticle.

Prep Feet

It’s time to turn your attention to your feet. Remove feet from the warm water and use a pumice or foot file to gently remove the hard skin from your heels and the balls of your foot. Dry off your feet, clip then file nails and push back cuticles, as you did with your hands. Massage in a rich moisturiser.

Back to Hand Prep
Dry your nails, then apply a drop of Glossworks’ Nail & Cuticle Oil to every nail, rubbing the oil into the cuticle in a circular motion. Finish by massaging your favourite hand cream into your palms, fingers and knuckles.

Take a cotton bud soaked in Glossworks Polish Remover and remove the excess oil from the nails.

Get Painting
Apply an even base coat of Glossworks’ BB Base Coat to every fingernail for an even-toned, smooth finish, plus it’ll help protect the nail. You could also build up the subtle colour of the BB base coat and use this as your main colour.

Once the base coat is dry, choose one of Glossworks’ Colour Lacquers. Use a generous amount of polish for a smooth coat and try to paint each nail using only three brush strokes: One on the left side, one on the right side and one down the middle. Apply two coats for a richer colour.

If you make a mistake, move on and finish the rest of your nails, then use a cotton bud soaked in nail varnish remover and start the nail again.

Once the colour coats are dry, finish off your manicure with a final coat of Glossworks’ multi-functional 3-in-1 polish, which prevents chipping and gives an extra-glossy finish.

Sit back, enjoy your music or podcast and sip your drink while you wait for your nails to dry. This might take up to fifteen minutes.

Once your nails are dry, repeat the process with your toes.
0 Hair Removal at Home https://www.planetorganic.com/hair-removal-at-home/ https://www.planetorganic.com/hair-removal-at-home/#comments Thurs, 14 May 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/hair-removal-at-home/ Hair removal is proving tricky during lockdown with salons closed, so we’ve pulled together our favourite at-home hair removal methods and aftercare advice. Hair removal is proving tricky during lockdown with salons closed, so we’ve pulled together our favourite at-home hair removal methods and aftercare advice.

Legs

Although shaved hair does grow quickly, it’s painless, fast, cost-effective and low on waste. Lather up Dr Bronner’s Lemongrass Shaving Soap and massage into damp legs then use Zero Waste Club’s stainless steel razor in long, upward strokes, taking particular care around knees and ankles.

Underarms, Bikini Line and Upper Lip

As these areas are more sensitive and prone to ingrown hairs, we like to use Acorelle’s hypoallergenic sensitive wax strips, made only with natural ingredients and enriched with aloe vera and organic honey.

Method:

Prep skin the day before by exfoliating with a mitt, scrub or body brush to remove dead skin cells.

Make sure skin is clean and free from any products when you’re ready to start waxing.

Warm up the way strip by rubbing between the palm of your hands. Pull apart and set one half aside.

Apply the strip onto the area, smoothing down in the direction of hair growth

.

For your upper lip, this would mean smoothing down from your nose towards your chin.

Pull the skin taught and rip in the opposite direction to hair growth. Do it quickly and with intent, otherwise you’ll have to do the area again!

Areas like the underarms and bikini line have different directions of hair growth, so you may need to go over the same patch at different angles to get all of the hairs.

Work methodically across the area until most of the hair are gone. Tidy up with a pair of tweezers.

Use the sweet almond oil to help remove any tacky bits of wax and to nourish the area.

Maintenance

Ingrown hairs can be a problem will all methods of hair removal. The best way to prevent them is by exfoliating the skin between hair removals. We like to use a Hydrea’s dry body brush on our legs before showering and a body scrub in the bath or shower to slough off dead skin cells.

Hair removal - especially shaving - can leave skin feeling dry, so make sure to keep skin moisturised. We love Fushi’s Really Good Cellulite Oil or Virgin Shea Butter to nourish and repair. 0 Freshening up Split Ends with Tabitha James Kraan https://www.planetorganic.com/freshening-up-split-ends/ https://www.planetorganic.com/freshening-up-split-ends/#comments Thurs, 14 May 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/freshening-up-split-ends/ Hairdresser and founder of Tabitha James Kraan haircare range, Tabitha walks us through trimming split ends without ruining the shape of your last haircut and how to inject some moisture into your locks with a hair oil head massage. It’s a great excuse to sit down, relax and be present.

Wunder Workshop’s Golden Balance is made from a blend of organic, Ayurvedic herbs to combat a stressful modern lifestyle, including ashwagandha, turmeric, black pepper to help absorb the turmeric, liquorice, ginger, black pepper and cayenne pepper.

For one cup:

1 cup /220ml plant-based milk
1/2 tsp Golden Balance
1 tsp Golden Turmeric Honey (or alternative sweetener, although we use this for a double dose of turmeric)

Heat the plant-based milk in a pan on the hob or with a milk frother.

As the milk is getting warm add the Golden Balance and stir well. Continue to heat the milk but make sure it doesn’t boil or simmer as this could make your golden milk taste bitter. Whisk before serving for extra frothiness.

Turn off the heat and stir in a teaspoon of Golden Turmeric Honey to taste.

Featured in this post

Golden Balance Adapotgen Blend

Golden Turmeric Honey

Dairy Free Milks

0 How to use aromatherapy to reduce stress https://www.planetorganic.com/how-to-use-aromatherapy-to-reduce-stress/ https://www.planetorganic.com/how-to-use-aromatherapy-to-reduce-stress/#comments Thurs, 07 May 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/how-to-use-aromatherapy-to-reduce-stress/ Feeling unsettled and apprehensive in these testing times? Uncertainty and unwelcome change will naturally cause feelings of stress to emerge and things can get a little overwhelming. Aromatherapy is an effective and enjoyable tool to help you find calm amid this quiet chaos.

The Tisserand Aromatherapy Total De-Stress Diffuser Oil is pre-blended with Geranium, Orange and Nutmeg to help you slow down, breathe and reclaim your calm. But if you would like to try blending yourself, there are many essential oil combinations that you can use to help keep calm, find clarity, gently uplift your mood and balance fraught emotions.

Starting out:
There are many safe ways to use essential oils, including through bathing, massage and diffusion. When starting out, we recommend following the below dilution and usage guidance and practicing caution as pure essential oils can be hazardous when used incorrectly. Please seek more specific oil advice regarding children and pregnant women.

Adding essential oils to a base oil like Tisserand Aromatherapy Sweet Almond Blending Oil gives you a blend you can use safely in contact with the skin – either directly in massage or in a bath. Never use essential oils neat on the skin or in the bath.

A blend is a mix of 2-5 different essential oils, although we consider 3 essential oils in combination to be the best synergy.

Try using the following oils together:

For soothing mind and body - Lavender, Bergamot & Roman Chamomile

For deep relaxation - Frankincense, Neroli & Bergamot

For positive productivity - May Chang, Lavender & Rosemary

For mental clarity - Peppermint, Lemon & Eucalyptus

To stay in control - Cypress, Frankincense & Lemon

Or try your own combination!

Usage guidance:
DIFFUSER
Fill your diffuser with water, such as the Tisserand Aromatherapy Aroma Spa Diffuser, and add 6-8 drops in total (e.g. 2 drops Frankincense, 1-2 drops Neroli & 3-4 drops Bergamot) of your chosen essential oils.

MASSAGE
Use 10 drops in total (e.g. 4 drops Lavender, 4 drops Bergamot & 2 drops Roman Chamomile) of your chosen essential oils per 20ml of blending oil. Using sweeping movements, apply to area of the body in need of a massage, re-applying as the blend absorbs into the skin.

Safety guidance for massage blend:

Suitable for 11 years +

Do not use on the face. Seek separate guidance for use on face

This is applicable for all skin types where there are no skin sensitive issues

BATH
Add 4-6 drops in total (e.g. 1-2 drops May Chang, 2-3 drops Lavender & 1 drop Rosemary) of your chosen essential oils to 20ml of blending oil. Just before carefully stepping in, pour half of the mixture into the water and swirl around, lie back and relax!

From our homes to yours, keep calm and stay safe.

P.S. Our body repairs and restores while we're asleep but with routines disrupted, getting a good night’s sleep can be tough. Here we’re sharing our ultimate sleep routine, starting with a long soak and a spot of meditation, to help get you get the rest you need.

Leave the Day Behind and Switch Off

During lockdown, we’re extremely reliant on our devices for work, human connection, even working out. Before bed, try and reserve a technology free hour to read, stretch, meditate or take a long bath.

It doesn’t have to be long, even five minutes of meditation will leave you feeling calmer. Blasta Henriet wrote a meditation guide for us to use with their eye pillows - have a read here. A short yoga sequence is a peaceful way to unwind too, we love this seven-minute sequence from Yoga with Adrienne.

To help unwind, try a natural supplement or take CBD oil a few hours before bed. Plants like ashwagandha, L-Theanine, lavender, valerian, chamomile and bacopa monnieri help foster a sense of calm, while cannabidiol may reduce anxiety. Motion Nutrition’s Unplug supplement, Blooming Blends’ Sleep Easy tincture and Better You’s CBD Oral Spray are three of our favourite calming supplements before bed.

Soak

Having a bath before bed helps us relax and the drop in body temperature after a hot bath or shower encourages the body to rest. Sip a cup of soothing chamomile tea for added relaxation.

Add a scoop of bath salts to your bath to soothe a tired body, and an essential oil or bath melt to relax the mind. We love Corinne Taylor’s handmade scented bath melts and salts, all handmade in rural East Sussex with carefully chosen organic botanicals.

Follow up with a magnesium-rich body oil or lotion to relieve tired muscles. OSI’s Good Night body lotion delivers a high dose of magnesium through the skin while the shea butter and sweet almond oil leaves skin soft and supple.

Set the Scene

The best environment for sleep is a cool, dark room. Take time to find the right pillows and get comfortable.

Aromatherapy and scent can be an effective way to signal to your brain that it’s time for sleep.

Try applying a lavender oil or Scentered’s Sleep Well Therapy Balm to your pulse points and inhaling. Find Scentered’s guide to using breathing techniques and aromatherapy to aid sleep on our blog here.

Spraying your pillow with a sleep spray like Neom’s is also great for triggering sleep, or spray Blooming Blends’ Sleep Easy mist directly onto your face.
Featured in this post

Blasta Henriet Eye Pillow

BetterYou CBD Spray

Scentered Sleep Well Therapy Balm

0 Supporting Your Workout https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-workout/ https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-workout/#comments Thurs, 30 Apr 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-workout/ The Planet Organic team go through their handpicked selections from our health range to make sure your body has everything it needs before, during and after your workout sessions. Here are our health buyer’s four essential supplements for supporting immune health. The best way to support our immune system is through plenty of sleep, regular exercise, a nutrient-rich diet and keeping stress levels to a minimum but to ensure we’ve got all bases covered, we like to include supplements into our daily routines. Here are our health buyer’s four essential supplements for supporting immune health.

Gut Health
We’re slowly realising the impact of gut health on our overall health and wellbeing. With the gut home to an estimated 70 percent of the cells that make up our immune system, live culture supplements can support the good bacteria in your gut and foster a diverse microbiome, helping to support a healthy immune system.

Try a liquid supplement with billions of live bacteria like Rhythm’s Life Shot, made from fermented organic young coconut and vegan kefir cultures for over 200 billion live bacteria, or Symprove’s water-based supplement, much-loved by the Planet Organic team.

Vitamin C
We recommend everyone takes Vitamin C as it encourages the production of white blood cells, and it has been shown to be able to both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections. Liposomal Vitamin C is particularly effective as it is fat rather than water based, and because the liposome’s membrane is made of the same fat found in the cell membranes throughout the body, this allows the liposomal Vitamin C to pass into cells easily and be delivered directly into the cells.

Each sachet of YourZooki Vitamin C contains 1000mg of Vitamin C wrapped in billions of nano-sized spheres called "liposomes" that shield, protect and deliver Vitamin C directly into the cells.

Manuka Honey
The anti-bacterial and healing properties of honey are well known, but make sure you’re taking a raw and unprocessed manuka honey for maximum benefits. Manuka Health’s honey is sustainably sourced from hives in pristine parts of New Zealand, from bees who feast on the native manuka trees. The MGO in the name stands for methylglyoxal, the unique compound in found in manuka honey, and the number next to it indicates the methylglyoxal content per kilogram.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D supports our immune response to infection and may protect against respiratory tract infections. Direct sunlight on unprotected skin is the best way to get your fix, but that isn’t possible for many of us during lockdown or during the cold winter months. One of the things we're missing the most is our morning coffee, so we've put together the ultimate guide for how to get your fix at home, including the best methods, best beans and how to get that all-important froth.

The Beans

If you have a coffee grinder (we'd recommend a burr grinder) it's best to buy whole beans and grind as and when you need them. The coarseness of the grind has a big impact on flavour, so start by grinding to a fine, sand-like texture, see if you like it, then gradually try more coarse grinds until you find the right one for your pallette. We'd recommend Cafe Direct's Espresso Blend whole beans for a delicate raisin aftertaste.

It's no problem if you don't have a grinder. Choose a ground coffee like this medium roast from Bristot - this is what we use in our stores.

For maximum flavour and to prevent it from going stale, make sure you store your ground coffee and beans in an air-tight container.

The Milk

If you’re like us, oat m*lk holds a special place in our hearts. Minor Figures Oat and Oatly Barista froth up really well, but we’ve got plenty of other plant-based m*lks to experiment with, from hemp seed to tiger nut.

Look at the fat and protein content. The higher the amount of fat, the bigger the mouthfeel and perceived sweetness. Higher levels of protein makes for better froth.

The “Espresso”

If you don’t have an espresso or coffee machine, here are some alternative ways to get you a shot of coffee.

Moka Pot
The classic stovetop espresso maker uses the pressure of steam to extract the coffee, and is probably the best way to get an espresso like coffee at home. Remember to keep the stove temperature low to medium as boiling too quickly will result in extracting more bitter flavours. Learn how to brew with one here:

Aeropress
The Aeropress uses pressure to extract the flavour of the coffee and is great for making a quick espresso style coffee at home. This video tutorial goes through the different brews you can make with this piece of kit.

French Press
It won’t taste as strong due to the lack of pressure, but you can make a concentrated coffee in a French press by using a lot less water than normal and leaving to brew. This video gives exact measurements:

Instant Coffee
If you don’t have any of the above, you could make a really concentrated instant-coffee, using around 50ml of water and a teaspoon of granules.

The Froth

Luckily there are plenty of ways to froth milk without a steaming wand.

On the hob. Heat up the milk of your choice in a pan on the hob, Once it’s hot (but not boiling) start to whisk until it works up into a foam.

In the microwave. Pour your milk into a jar with a lid, leaving at least half of the jar empty. Screw the lid on tightly, then shake it like you’re mixing a cocktail for 30 seconds, until the milk is foamy. Microwave for 40 second, until it’s hot.

Using a French Press. Pour wamed milk into the French press, leaving plenty of space for froth, then push and pull the plunger up and down through the milk continuously for a minute or so. Once it's frothy, you can even create latte art with it.

The Mug

For the ultimate coffee-shop experience, warm up your mug by filling it with a splash of boiling water, leaving it for 30 seconds, then tossing the water away before filling up with coffee. It’ll keep your coffee hot.

Featured in this post

Bristot Ground Coffee

Equal Exchange

Plant Based Milks

0 Green Goddess Noodle Salad from Biona https://www.planetorganic.com/green-goddess-noodle-salad-from-biona/ https://www.planetorganic.com/green-goddess-noodle-salad-from-biona/#comments Thurs, 23 Apr 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/green-goddess-noodle-salad-from-biona/ Whether you’re working or not, taking a proper break away from laptops and phones to refuel with nourishing food is essential. At home self-care solutions to keep you looking and feeling yourself.

Stress and uncertainty can take its toll on the body and mind. Whether you’re working during this current climate, or at home possibly feeling disconnected, taking time to care for ourselves physically and mentally is never more important. While skincare, to some, may appear a superfluous luxury, it can help underpin our daily routine and sense of normality, also providing relief and a moment of calm. We asked our #TeamClean on Instagram what they’d like to see from us, and self care and distraction was still high up there.
With that, here’s our tips to keep you feeling and looking yourself, while hopefully taking a moment of calm, however you’re spending your time.

Keep your hands healthy.

Whatever your daily routine may currently look like, the advice is to wash our hands more frequently and at least for 40-60 seconds each time. Now’s the time to reach for a sulphate-free hand wash if you can. Sulphates or ‘SLS’ can be drying, stripping the skin of natural oils and weakening it’s protective barrier.
Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Hand Wash will help provide optimal hand-hydration and protection from uncomfortable chapping and drying, while still purifying the skin. Follow up with our Energising Hand Lotion to lock in moisture, which is especially needed when using alcohol-based hand sanitisers - a must in the current climate.

A moment for your mind.

Switch off the news, stop scrolling your feed and take time to ease your mind. If you have a bath, stand in it and scrub dry skin with one of our body scrubs, then simply lie down and allow the salts, nourishing oils and fragrances disperse while your muscles relax. Our Moroccan Rose, Atlantic Kelp and Guerande Salt scrubs all contain aromatherapeutic blends of natural fragrances, so breath deeply as you relax.
For those without a bath, use them in-shower, too or as an anytime hand scrub to avoid flaky hands - just avoid using on chapped or broken skin. When you’re finished, lock in moisture with your favourite body cream and spritz & Now To Sleep Pillow Spray on your pillows, fresh linens or even pyjamas to further help your mind unwind.

Keep up the cleansing.

Outdoor pollution, especially for city livers, can wreak havoc on skin. Airborne particles can clog pores, induce breakouts and lead to premature ageing. Indoor air is essentially the same, not accounting for dust inside our homes. Proper cleansing here is key, AM and PM. Massage Perfect Canvas Clean Jelly Oil Cleanser over your skin to break up dirt and impurities, and really take your time with it, as massaging can not only increase microcirculation but can release pent-up stress and give you a moment of calm. Why not practice some deep breathing as you cleanse, too.

Reveal even, glowing skin.

AHAs and BHAs are known for helping deeply cleanse, break up dead cells and smooth skin texture, but they can make your skin more sun sensitive. As we’re spending more time in our homes, now is a great time to incorporate acid-based formulas like Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic and Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask. We’re not recommending you go gung-ho and irritate your skin, as inflammation can lead to premature ageing, so use AHA Tonic daily and Glycol Lactic Mask as a twice-weekly treatment, Depending how your skin responds, you can use AHA Tonic morning and evening - but always use sunscreen when venturing outdoors.
If you’ve got hyperpigmentation, being indoors is the perfect time to help fade discolouration as sun exposure won’t counteract your efforts. Overnight Glow Dark Spot Sleeping Cream is a non-acid treatment, so you can use it in conjunction with all of the above.

Future proof your skin.

If you are lucky enough to get outside - whether that's in your garden or on a run to your local park, be sure to safeguard your smooth complexion. Use Clean Screen SPF 30 to protect skin from burning and prevent premature ageing such as leathering and hyperpigmentation in one simple step.
However you are tackling the recent changes to your daily routine, take care of yourself, of others and stay safe.
0 Sourdough School Tin Loaf Recipe https://www.planetorganic.com/sourdough-school-tin-loaf-recipe/ https://www.planetorganic.com/sourdough-school-tin-loaf-recipe/#comments Thurs, 09 Apr 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/sourdough-school-tin-loaf-recipe/ Our friends at The Sourdough School are sharing their most basic sourdough tin loaf recipe. A double refreshment as outlined in the timetable above will make a beautiful loaf.

Mix
In a large bowl, mix 700g of your water with the starter, remembering to pay attention to the temperature of the water. Mix well – getting plenty of oxygen in at this point helps the yeast to reproduce. Add the flour and salt and mix until all the ingredients come together.

You don’t need to knead: just mix well, then wait 10 minutes. You can then add the last 50g water, incrementally (2 x 25g), over the course of 5–10 minutes, allowing each addition to absorb well. This technique helps create a beautiful open crumb because the gluten forms stronger bonds when the dough is less hydrated.

Prepare the tin by greasing a sheet of baking parchment lightly with butter, ghee, coconut oil or lard (not olive oil.) Then line the tins with the baking parchment. Transfer the dough to the tins.

Prove
Leave the dough overnight on the kitchen table, covered with a clean tea towel. As a general guide, the ambient temperature at the School is generally about 23°C.

In the morning, the dough will be 50 percent bigger. If you prefer, at this stage you can make your loaf sourer and therefore more digestible, by transferring it to the fridge for another 3–4 hours before baking.

Bake
Preheat your oven to 220°C/428F/Gas mark 7 for at least 30 minutes before you are ready to bake. Place a small pan of boiling water at the bottom of the oven (or use a Dutch oven if you can fit your tin inside one). The extra steam from the water will help to form a beautiful crust.

Drizzle the olive oil over the top and around the sides of the loaf. Reduce the heat to 180°C/355F/Gas Mark 4 and bake for about 45–50 minutes. I don’t give precise timings, as everyone’s oven is different. Bake to the point that you like the look of the loaf – it should be a beautiful golden colour. As soon as it comes out of the oven, carefully place it in the box provided by the person you are baking for. Be sure to maintain correct social distancing. See protocol here on the Sourdough Exchange page.

Storage
I usually advise that sourdough needs to cool in the tin for a few minutes before cooling completely out of the tin, preferably on a wire rack.

Tips
How to refresh your starter

You can see my video here on how to refresh your sourdough starter.

Leftover starter
I realise it feels wasteful to discard when refreshing, but please remember that this gives the yeast a boost and is a necessary step because the acidity retards yeast. You will get flat, sour bread if you keep it all. You can use the leftover starter in many other recipes such as pancakes or muffins, or if you are a Sourdough Club member my recipe for chocolate rye. You can also compost it. 0 Seven Ways to Stay Calm When You're Stuck at Home with Pukka Herbs https://www.planetorganic.com/stay-calm-with-pukka-herbs/ https://www.planetorganic.com/stay-calm-with-pukka-herbs/#comments Fri, 03 Apr 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/stay-calm-with-pukka-herbs/ Working from home and self-isolation is now the ‘new normal’ for many and we face a period of uncertainty.

Swapping the office desk for a kitchen table, and face-to-face meetings with video chats has the potential to dampen our moods, making us feel more anxious and tense than ever before.

And whilst ‘me time’ is crucial to give our minds and bodies a rest, when it’s forced upon you, it might not seem so appealing! These 7 expert-approved tips will help keep you calm when everything around you seems so crazy…

Establish calm surroundings

If you’re going to be spending all your time at home, it needs to become somewhere that you’re happy to spend time in.

When the weather permits, open windows for 15 to 20 minutes to remove stale air from inside the home, and allow fresh air in. If you dry your washing indoors, it’s even more important to allow air to circulate and to get rid of damp air. Natural, toxic-free candles can also help to create a calming atmosphere in the home.

Sip on herbs

We’re all familiar with the phrase ‘hug in a mug’ and you won’t be surprised to hear that the simple action of sipping a warm cup of tea can be oh-so-comforting. What’s more if that tea has additional herbs and ingredients to calm you, such as chamomile, lime flower or tulsi, all the better.

“In an office environment, people give themselves time throughout the day to take a tea break, but at home we’re not as likely to do so,” explains Jo Webber, Head of Herbal Education and Ayurvedic Practitioner at organic wellbeing company Pukka Herbs.

“A mug of herbal tea can help to calm a busy mind, particularly if it incorporates well known stress-relieving herbs. One of my favourites is Pukka’s Relax blend, made with chamomile flower to help us unwind, as well as fennel seed and ginger to ease digestion and give anxious tummy’s some respite.”

Exercise at home

Personal Trainer Lucy Gornall says that despite gyms being closed, working out at home is still a great way to get your heart rate up, and clear an anxious mind.

“I recommend a 20-minute-high intensity interval routine”, says Lucy. “Set a timer and work on a 45 seconds on, 15 seconds off set-up. Alternate between squat jumps, burpees, high knees and mountain climbers; you’ll be breaking a sweat in no time. Plus, you can do it in front of the TV!”
For easy-to-follow routines, check out Youtube, which is home to a multitude of workouts from yoga through to high impact exercises.

Housework

Psychotherapist Noel McDermott (www.noelmcdermott.net) explains: “The mental health benefits of housework cannot be overplayed. Cleaning and de-cluttering do wonders for your mood. So, when self-isolating, jump to it and get everything done you’ve been putting off in your home.”

Scrubbing the oven, clearing out old clothes and cleaning windows are just three jobs that we often find on that never-ending to-do list…

Put the music on…
“Make some ‘mix tapes’ and get ready for the many parties you are going to throw when you get back to civilian life,” says Noel. “Singing and dancing are great ways to release pent up energy and upbeat music will quickly put a smile on your face.”

Take time to breathe

We often underestimate the importance of breathing, but “practicing mindfulness and meditation may help you manage stress and high blood pressure,” says Jo. “It can also improve sleep quality and enable you to feel more balanced and connected.

“When you’re constantly under stress, your adrenal glands overproduce the hormone cortisol. Overexposure to this hormone can affect the function of your brain, immune system and other organs.”

Not sure how to get started? This simple routine shared by the NHS will help calm the mind in just five minutes:

Find a comfortable position – stood up, sat down, lying back – and place your feet roughly hip-width apart.

Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, gently and regularly. Try counting steadily from 1 to 5 on your breath in. Then, without pausing, let it flow out gently, counting to 5 again. Do this for up to 5 minutes.

Embrace routine

You might find that you work and eat from the same table, and actually, with no human connect, find yourself settling down for a day in your dressing gown, with no real motivation to get dressed or even shower. However, going about your normal morning routine – even as so far as setting your alarm- will help you get in the right frame of mind and boost your productivity.

Lucy explains, “Too much ‘downtime’ is not a good thing in times of uncertainty and keeping your usual routines helps us have a sense of control. While you’re waiting, drop the 4 tea bags into your jar. Pour the 500 ml of boiling water into your jar and allow the tea bags to steep for approximately 5 minutes.

*Different teas require different steep times and temperatures so please research the specifics of your tea before brewing.

2) Remove the tea bags with your stirring utensil and add your 120 grams of sugar. Mix until dissolved.

3) Top up your 500 ml of sweetened tea with 1 litre of cold filtered water and stir. This will cool the liquid down to below 35 degrees, making it safe to add your starter liquid/ SCOBY.

4) After the tea is cooled, add your starter liquid and SCOBY to the jar and stir.

5) Secure the cloth over your jar with a rubber band. Place in a warm, airy space out of direct sunlight. The ideal brewing temperature for kombucha is between 23 and 26 degrees.

6) Leave your kombucha to brew for 5 days. After 5 days, remove and dispose of the layer of cellulose that has grown on top of the liquid. Begin stirring your kombucha with a clean utensil, bottom to top for 1 minute, twice daily. This will help to oxygenate the liquid and encourage healthy bacteria growth which will speed up the fermentation process, dissipate much of the ethanol produced and ultimately produce a cleaner and more delicious tasting kombucha.

7) It is now entirely up to you to determine when your kombucha is ready based on your own personal preference. We recommend a period of about 2 weeks when fermenting at 24 degrees. If you’d like to get more specific, you can purchase PH strips/ litmus paper. Finished kombucha normally sits between 2.8 and 3.1 ph. When your kombucha is ready, put a lid on your jar and place it in the fridge. This will stop the fermentation process. Remember to save at least 1/4 (500 ml) of your final 2 litre brew as starter liquid/ SCOBY for your next batch. If you’d like to scale up to 4 litres for your next brew, save 1 litre of this batch.

Any questions? Sit down on a yoga mat or soft rug with your knees bent and your feet grounded. Fold the blanket in half and place behind you. The blanket will support you from your tailbone to the top of your head.
2. Place the bolster under your knees for support.
3. Lie back onto the blanket and place arms out at a 45-degree angle, palms facing up and your knees relaxed over the bolster.
4. Place the eye pillow over your eyes. The eye pillow will apply gentle pressure that send signals to the brain to relax, it will also block out unwanted light and help quiet your mind.
5. Breathe deeply through your nose and exhale deeply through your nose or your mouth. Try lengthening your exhale and keep the inhale shorter than your exhale - inhale for 4 counts and exhale for 8 counts.

Aim to stay in this position for at least 2 minutes and longer if needed.

Whilst maintaining the pose and breathing, travel across your body in your mind and acknowledge each body part as you go along. Starting with the big toe, second toe, middle toe and so on - move on to the shin, calf and thigh and across the abdomen, bellybutton, ribs, shoulder and on to the arm down to your fingers and back to the throat, across your face to the tip of your head and across to the other arm and all the way back down through the opposite leg.

This exercise is really helpful to help clear your mind and deepen relaxation. Now, with the purchase of As Nature Intended, we are moving towards our expansion goal and we can’t wait to meet our new communities across London.

We’ll keep you posted on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook as our plans develop over the coming weeks, and we've popped our press release below for you to have a read through.

Planet Organic Announces Takeover of As Nature Intended

Planet Organic, the leading UK health and wellbeing retailer, has acquired As Nature Intended, the chain of seven London-based organic and natural food stores.

Planet Organic has targeted opening 10 new stores in the Greater London area within next five years. In 2019 Planet Organic opened a new store in Queen’s Park, North London, taking its shop count to eight. Now, with the purchase of As Nature Intended, Planet Organic increases its store count to become the largest specialist organic grocer chain in the UK.
Planet Organic was founded in 1995 and in 2018 Inverleith LLP became the majority shareholder to help expand the Company’s growth. As Nature Intended was founded in 1999.

Planet Organic’s Chairman, Ben Thomson, says:
“This deal allows us to further the mission of Planet Organic to provide food and products that are healthy for our customers as well as healthy for the planet. We share a similar outlook to As Nature Intended, a company which, like Planet Organic, promotes wellness with high environmental standards. Both organisations believe the future of High Street retailing is in providing experience- based shopping for the communities where we are located.

“In the short term our primary focus is to make sure we are there to support our customers, and the customers of our newly acquired stores, through the coronavirus outbreak. We have a very knowledgeable staff who can help answer questions on what foods, supplements and lifestyle changes we can make to help to boost immunity and general wellbeing.

“In the longer term this acquisition allows Planet Organic to grow quickly into locations we have already identified as ideal for our brand. With the addition of As Nature Intended stores, we will be the largest organic grocery chain in the UK with plans to grow further as the popularity of healthy foods continues.”

Planet Organic’s CEO, Peter Marsh, says:
“Planet Organic is the original organic supermarket chain in the UK. There is nothing we like more than to see our customers relaxing and chatting over a cup of coffee, an immune boosting juice, or helping them to shop in an environmentally friendly way, enjoying our unpackaged products, home- compostable packaging and zero-food waste policies. Ours is the sort of shopping that is the future of the high street. We are looking forward to providing this Planet Organic approach into the newly acquired stores in new communities.”

Caroline Gooding, As Nature Intended owner and CEO, who now steps down from her role, commented:
“Planet Organic is an amazingly complementary business, operating similar stores in London, with limited overlap with our own premises, and most importantly pursuing a similar mission and sharing our core values.

“While I am naturally sad to have reached the end of this 20-year adventure, I firmly believe that stepping back now is in the best interests of the As Nature Intended business, my colleagues and our customers. I am confident that I am passing the company into highly capable and committed hands, and that its new owners will be able to make the most of the opportunities for what now becomes the biggest and best operator in this market.”

0 Supporting your Immune System https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-immune-system-/ https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-immune-system-/#comments Fri, 13 Mar 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/supporting-your-immune-system-/

Staying well and supporting a healthy immune system is one our our best defences against viruses. We want to do all we can to help our communities keep healthy, so we’ve put together a short guide on how to support overall health and our immune systems, in addition to government health advice. Although particularly relevant now, this is our long-term advice for overall health and wellbeing.

Eat Well
Diet is hugely important, so ensure you’re getting enough nutrients from a diverse range of food sources including vegetables, legumes, wholegrains, proteins, nuts and seeds with a focus on plants and eating the rainbow. Eat organic fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes as they contain higher levels of antioxidants compared to conventionally grown crops and are more nutrient-dense, plus they have lower concentrations of pesticides, which can have a negative impact on gut health. Organic meat and dairy products contain around 50% more omega-3 fatty acids than non-organic, and organic milk and dairy contains higher concentrations of iron and Vitamin E. All of the food at our mix and match counter and our fresh juices, smoothies and coffees and certified organic.

Support Gut Health
The gut houses over 70% of our immune system cells - more than anywhere else in the body - which protect us from external disruptors like pollution and chemicals, and internal disruptors like pathogens, emotions and stress. The microbiota interacts with immune cells and stimulates our immune system as needed but this communication can be damaged by disruptors such as stress, poor diet and overuse of antibiotics. In order to support gut function, include prebiotic foods and spices in our everyday diet. These include kefir, inulin, chicory, Jerusalem artichokes and high beta-carotene foods like carrots, sweet potatoes and leafy greens. Bone broths can help to repair the gut and multiple-strain probiotics can help to improve the variety of microbes in the gut.

Sleep Well and Rest Up
During sleep, our immune system secretes cytokines, a group of proteins that regulate immunity and inflammation. Adequate sleep also supports T cells, a type of immune cell that fights against pathogens. Going to bed early enough, creating a calming sleep environment and preparing your body to sleep can all help to improve the quality of your rest and in turn, support your immune system. Read up on our sleep tips and recommendations here. If you feel exhausted or run down, listen to your body and rest up, rather than pushing yourself with a jam-packed schedule or intense exercise, as this will only prolong recovery time.

Reduce Stress
A stressed body and mind is also more vulnerable to illness due to increased cortisol levels - the hormone that puts out body on high alert. Try meditation, breathing exercises or taking a long bath to lower cortisol production and supplement with apoptogenic Reishi mushroom that work as a natural stress modulator and immune booster.

Supplement
Supplementing our diets we have enough vitamins and minerals to support bodily function and boost the immune system.

We recommend everyone takes Vitamin C as it helps to boost the immune system by encouraging the production of white blood cells, and it has been shown to be able to both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections. Liposomal Vitamin C is particularly effective as it is fat-based rather than water based, like regular Vitamin C supplements, and because the liposome’s membrane is made of the same fat found in the cell membranes throughout the body, this allows the liposomal Vitamin C to pass into cells easily and be delivered directly into the cells.

Additionally, we recommend taking an immune supporting multi-vitamin like Wild Nutrition’s which delivers food-grown vitamins and minerals, amino acids, biomass mycelial mushrooms and Elderberry.

Take lauric acid, found in human breast milk and coconut oil, in the form of Monolaurin to support immune health without adverse effects on beneficial intestinal flora. Designs for Health’s Monolaurin Avail contains Vitamin C for added immune benefit, and sunflower lecithin to enhance absorption of the monolaurin.

Family Health
The same advice - eat well, support gut health, get enough sleep and supplement – is true for children too. Feed them foods high in Vitamin C such as oranges, kiwis and tangerines and B6 rich foods such as leafy greens and chickpeas, and supplement with elderberry syrup, Manuka honey and a probiotic.

 0 Let Us Help You Sleep https://www.planetorganic.com/let-us-help-you-sleep/ https://www.planetorganic.com/let-us-help-you-sleep/#comments Weds, 11 Mar 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/let-us-help-you-sleep/
We all know that a good night’s sleep is essential for our mental health and cognitive function, but it’s also crucial for a healthy immune system – something we all need now more than ever.

But getting the holy-grail of an eight-hour, uninterrupted sleep can be a complex, anxiety-inducing affair. Staying calm before and winding down after a busy day have never been trickier to master. All of us are beautifully unique and have different ways of managing this busy lifestyle but, fortunately, to supplement these there is a natural remedy out there to help restore calm and balance to our bodies and minds.

Introducing ashwagandha…

Although we've been slow to clock on to the benefits of ashwagandha in the UK, it has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic practice to manage stress-related conditions and also help with chronic fatigue, insomnia and adrenal fatigue.

Ayurveda views ashwagandha as one of the most prized rejuvenating herbs, known as a ‘rasayana’ in Sanskrit. Rasayanas are thought to enhance both the quality and quantity of life, nourish the mind and enhance physical vigour, making them perfect for when we are feeling weak and exhausted. Classed as a modern-day ‘adaptogen’, ashwagandha adapts to the needs of the body, helping to support it and reduce negative changes during times of emotional and physical stress by strengthening the endocrine and nervous systems. A growing body of evidence is now being collated around this powerful herb with an impressive variety of health benefits.

Stress is often at the root of our sleeping problems: When we’re troubled, our sleep is too. Ashwagandha’s botanical name, withania somnifera, gives us further clues as to its properties. The Latin word ‘somnifera’ is translated as ‘sleep-inducing’, reflecting its ability to support deeper sleep. Ashwagandha tackles the problem at the root as it acts directly on the trigger of stress by regulating the imbalanced cortisol level and nourishing the adrenal glands. It acts directly on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, modulating the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol, from the adrenal glands. Chronic stress is a major health concern worldwide and of course impacts our sleeping habits.

0 Help The Honeybee Spelt Sourdough Pancakes https://www.planetorganic.com/help-the-honeybee-spelt-sourdough-pancakes/ https://www.planetorganic.com/help-the-honeybee-spelt-sourdough-pancakes/#comments Thurs, 06 Feb 2020 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/help-the-honeybee-spelt-sourdough-pancakes/ Taken from Food For Thought: Changing The World One Bite at a Time by Vanessa Kimbell, founder of The Sourdough School

Every year, I find some local honey for the children to give to their father, and rather like Pooh Bear, he stashes it away. I get him to share it on Sunday mornings though, because honey is perfect for drizzling on pancakes.

Using honey also makes me think about the effort that local beekeepers put into looking after their hives. But our bees are in trouble; and if the bees are, then so are we. We need bees: it’s estimated that they pollinate as much as 30 per cent of humanity’s food crops, everything from figs, apples and avocados through to broccoli, onions and pumpkins and berries,
nuts and spices. The sudden decline in their numbers seems to be caused by two factors: contamination of the pollen on which the bees feed by pesticides and fungicides; and then pests and parasites such as aethina, verroa and nosema attacking weakened bee populations. What we know is that if we lose our bees, we will lose a lot more than just honey: we will lose
much of the world’s food.

So here are five things you can do to help the honeybee. Let a corner of your garden go wild: weeds are often a food source for bees. Plant more bee-friendly flowers and herbs: the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) publishes a list that you can find online. Don’t use chemical sprays in your garden because they get carried back to the hive in pollen. Provide fresh water in a shallow container with some stones for bees to land on: bees need to drink. And find a local beekeeper who sells natural honey and buy two jars: one for you and one for a friend.

Ingredients

250g unrefreshed 1-week-old sourdough starter (you can find all the information you need to get going here on The Sourdough School's website)
2 medium eggs
75g caster sugar
1 teaspoon mixed spice
½ teaspoon sea salt
175ml whole milk
200g spelt flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
1½ teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons rapeseed oil
honey, soured cream and sliced
bananas, to serve

Method

Put the sourdough starter, eggs, sugar, mixed
spice, salt and milk in a mixing bowl and whisk
well.

Sift the flour, bicarbonate of soda and cream
of tartar together into the sourdough mixture,
stirring as you do so, just enough for the
ingredients to be mixed to a consistent batter
with no lumps.

Heat a little of the oil in a heavy-based frying
pan over a medium heat for about 1 minute:
not too hot. Here's the inside scoop on fermentation and the evidence behind the proposed health benefits.

What is fermentation?

Fermentation is when bacteria and yeast 'pre-digest' food and drink, producing a range of vitamins, beneficial organic acids and other health-promoting compounds. Generally, anything that uses microbes to transform simple ingredients fits the 'fermented food' bill. They may have boomed recently, but fermented foods have been around for thousands of years! Some of my favourites include kombucha (fermented tea), kefir (fermented milk, or sugary water if you use water grains), live yogurt and sauerkraut (fermented cabbage).

The health benefits: where’s the evidence?

Traditional fermented foods are associated with a whole host of potential benefits, including increasing vitamin concentrations (such as folate and vitamin B12), reducing anti-nutrients, lowering blood pressure, supporting our immunity and having a calming effect. Fermenting may also lower gluten and lactose content in some sourdough bread and dairy, respectively.

Although I am a big fan of fermented foods and anecdotally, I’ve seen first-hand the physical and mental benefits of them, with my science hat on, I must declare the clinical evidence for most types is currently limited. The exception being fermented dairy, where there is decent evidence for the health benefits across heart health, bone health, digestion and weight management. The clinical evidence aside, our ancestors have been having fermented foods for thousands of years and associating them with benefit, not to mention they are so full of flavour. So yes high-quality clinical studies need to be done, but in the meantime I do recommend people include fermented foods into their daily diet.

They may also contain live microbes, although it’s worth noting that’s not the case for all fermented foods, as many die off in the processing.

Fermenting at home: a beginner’s guide

Despite the rumours, fermenting is surprisingly little effort – once you’ve prepared it, you just leave it and allow the microbes to do all the hard work. You can later return to a dish that’s transformed and ready to serve. Some fermented foods (such as kimchi or sauerkraut) do require more love and care, but there are plenty of time-efficient options, including kefir, yoghurt and my sourdough wraps (recipe in my book!).

Before you begin, I should also make you aware that, as with dietary fibre, going from a little to a lot too quickly could make some people extra gassy (while your inner community of microbes have a feast!) so it's best to increase gradually. Chat to your GP first if you have a weakened immune system or are pregnant too.

Megan’s Favourite Kimchi Recipe, Eat Yourself Healthy, published by Penguin Life

An iconic condiment in Korean culture, this ancient flavour bomb is said to be one of the secrets behind the Koreans' long and healthy lives. Kimchi is known as a 'wild ferment’ as it uses the microbes naturally found on plants and in the air (versus a culture-based ferment like kefir). I love kimchi with eggs (my favourite), salads or feta on crackers – the options are endless.

Equipment: 500ml glass jar with lid
Ingredients (Serves 8, 40g portions)

Base:

200g Chinese cabbage (or cabbage of choice)

25g sea salt (don't worry, you won't be eating this)

Toppers:

1 carrot (50g), grated

1 spring onion, diced

50g daikon radish, chopped into matchsticks

1 garlic clove, finely sliced

1 tsp ginger, grated

1 tsp gochugaru powder, OR 1/2 tsp chilli powder and 1/2 tsp paprika

1 tbsp tamari (or soy sauce)

Method

Rinse the cabbage leaves under running water (to get rid of any residual soil) before chopping to the desired thickness.

Put the cabbage and salt in a bowl. Firmly massage the salt into the cabbage.

Pour 500ml of water, filtered or de-chlorinated, over the cabbage and submerge it by sitting a plate on top. Let it soak for 2 hours.

Drain the soaked cabbage, and rinse three times to get rid of the excess salt. Squeeze out any excess water in the cabbage and place back in a bowl.

Add all the topper ingredients and mix well, before transferring the mixture into a 500ml jar and, using your fist, punching down so there’s a layer of juice separating the raw kimchi and the air above.

Place your glass weight or mini jar on top of the raw kimchi, making sure to submerge all the vegetables.

Screw the lid on and leave at room temperature (ideally, 18–22°C), out of direct sunlight. You may recognise Patka and Martin from the several London farmers’ markets they sell their unpackaged krauts at weekly. In 2017, PAMA moved their ferment operation from east London to the serene Sheepdrove Organic Farm in Lambourn, West Berkshire, where they continue to hand make their krauts and ferments surrounded by nature and healthy air.
Here’s their recipe for a traditional sauerkraut but feel free to experiment by adding in your own fresh spices and herbs.

You will need:

1 medium head of white cabbage

2 carrots

5g caraway seeds

15g of Himalayan or sea salt

1 litre jar, sterilised with boiling hot water

A weight that fits inside your jar

1. Finely shred the cabbage and grate the carrots into a mixing bowl.
2. Using your hands, mix the vegetables together with the salt and caraway seeds. It’s important to use sea salt or Himalayan salt for ferments as some highly processed salts can stall the fermentation process.
3. Continue to mix through until the salt is evenly distributed and the vegetables have released a lot of liquid.
4. Take your clean jar and add in the kraut mix, packing the mixture in and pouring over all the juices from the bowl. The cabbage must be kept under the surface of the liquid, so make sure there are no bits of cabbage clinging to the sides of the jar, then place your weight on top of the mixture to push everything below the surface. You can buy fermenting weights or you can improvise with a ramekin, a small dish or even a stone – it just has to be squeaky clean.
5. Close the jar and leave it to ferment at room temperature for two to four weeks, ensuring the sauerkraut is always covered with brine in the jar. You will need to undo the lid to let the air out occasionally.
7. After two weeks, if the kraut is as sour and tangy as you like it, it’s ready to eat. Store it in the fridge after this for up to six months.

0 Our New Home Compostable Packaging https://www.planetorganic.com/our-new-home-compostable-packaging-/ https://www.planetorganic.com/our-new-home-compostable-packaging-/#comments Mon, 19 Aug 2019 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/our-new-home-compostable-packaging-/ It’s taken a few years of researching, testing and redeveloping, but we are extremely proud to re-introduce our 120-strong range of organic store cupboard ingredients, now in home compostable, 100% plastic free packaging.

Most plastic bags for store cupboard items are not recyclable, so we are delighted to now be using home compostable packaging for all of our Planet Organic store cupboard products, from red rice to apple chips and flaked almonds to gluten free oats.

Our new bags are made from two layers of material for strength; FSC certified sustainable eucalyptus chippings and GM-free corn, stuck together with home compostable glue. The bag has been certified by the TUV as OK Home Compostable and even though we hope they don’t end up here, they are certified as marine compostable too. When these bags break down, they will leave no toxic residue, unlike biodegradable or plastic packaging.

How do I dispose of it?
If your local council collects food waste separately, pop it in there, or chuck it onto your garden compost heap, if you have one. When disposing with food waste to the council, we’d recommend snipping it up into smaller pieces to avoid it being removed.

We know these options aren’t available for everyone, so if you dispose of these bags with your other waste, it will break down in landfill too and not leave any toxic residue. The bags will compost within one to two years, depending on the conditions.

Composability is a characteristic of a product or packaging that allows it to biodegrade under specific conditions. Composting can reduce the volume of organic waste quite significantly, while the compost produced can be used for agricultural and horticultural purposes. About 50% of all domestic waste comprises organic material, a percentage that is set to grow in the future due to the growing popularity of biodegradable products like packaging, disposable cutlery and plates etc.

So, what’s the difference between industrially compostable, home compostable and biodegradable?

Biodegradable means it will eventually break down. It is not going to stay at landfill for decades or hundreds of years.

Compostable, on the other hand, means it is not only going to break down, but it is also not going to leave any toxic residues during the process of breaking down. There are different levels of composability which depend on time, temperature and oxygen levels.

Industrially compostable means that packaging can only be broken down in an industrial composting plant. It requires very high temperatures and very low oxygen levels during this process. It can be broken down in around 180 days under the right conditions.
Unfortunately, there are not a lot of Industrial Composting Sites available in the UK. Most councils also cannot deal with industrially compostable materials due to lack of infrastructure.

Home compostable does not require higher temperatures or a lack of oxygen to break down, therefore it can break down without special industrial conditions.
0 Cashew, Sweet Potato and Tamarind Curry https://www.planetorganic.com/cashew-sweet-potato-and-tamarind-curry/ https://www.planetorganic.com/cashew-sweet-potato-and-tamarind-curry/#comments Tues, 09 Jul 2019 00:00:00 GMT Rude Health https://www.planetorganic.com/cashew-sweet-potato-and-tamarind-curry/ Our friends at Rude Health have teamed up with ultimate vegetarian foodie and author of The Modern Cook's Year, Anna Jones, for this comforting plant based recipe.

‘This recipe is a version of a recipe that has become a weeknight classic in my house. This recipe offers a little seasonal inspiration for topping L&F's cauli pizza bases at home.

Ingredients:

2-3 white baby potatoes

4 asparagus

Handful of almond flakes

Mint leaves

1/2 lemon

For the pesto:

60g spinach

60g basil

120g almonds

120ml olive oil

Juice and zest of 1 lemon

1 garlic clove

1/2 teaspoon salt

1. Heat the oven to 180°C and line an oven tray with baking paper.
2. Place the potatoes in a pan and cover with cold water. Add half a teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil. Leave for 5 minutes then drain and rinse under cold water. This step allows the potatoes to cook evenly and ensures you get the best potato slices possible.
3. To make the pesto, put all ingredients into a blender, blitz and set aside. Check for seasoning and adjust if necessary.
4. Once the potatoes are cooled enough to touch, take a mandolin or sharp knife and slice the potatoes thinly length ways. Lightly and evenly brush both sides with a little olive oil, season well and lay out on the baking tray. Roast in the oven for 15-20 minutes until a few charring marks start to appear and the edges are slightly crisp.
5. While the potatoes are in the oven, prepare the asparagus by snapping off the woody ends and massage with a little olive oil. If they're thick spears, we recommend slicing down the middle before cooking to give a more manageable bite.
6. Lay the asparagus in a hot griddle pan going against the ridges, season with salt and pepper and leave for a few minutes. Turn them over and repeat until beautifully charred on both sides. You want there to still be a nice bite to them.
7. Take your Luna & Fennel pizza base and top with the pesto, then potato slices and lastly the asparagus. Pop in a pre-heated oven for five minutes to heat through and once cooked, finish with some fresh mint leaves, toasted almond flakes and a generous squeeze of lemon juice. 0 National Refill Day https://www.planetorganic.com/national-refill-day/ https://www.planetorganic.com/national-refill-day/#comments Weds, 19 Jun 2019 00:00:00 GMT Unpackaged https://www.planetorganic.com/national-refill-day/ National Refill Day is a public awareness campaign aiming to make single-use plastic bottles a thing of the past. The BBC1 documentary ‘War on Plastic’ has highlighted, yet again, the complexity of waste and recycling as well as the problems of illegal plastic waste dumps in developing countries such as Malaysia – who receive a lot of the UK’s exported plastic, supposedly for ‘recycling’.

The partnership between Unpackaged and Planet Organic grew because we all believe reuse is a better answer than recycling. But we’re all in this together! For reuse to work, we need YOU to join us and bring your own kit to Planet Organic to refill.

We’re going to show you what you can do and why it’s important.

Unpackaged Refills @ Planet Organic
Planet Organic have a wide array of ingredients and snacking items in the refill sections in four stores – Muswell Hill, Torrington Place, Westbourne Grove, and Islington (and soon to be Queen’s Park) – from healthy staples such as short grain brown rice, oats and quinoa to nuts, seeds and delicious raw chocolate covered almonds. Did you know Planet Organic have unpackaged coffee beans which you can grind at home for maximum freshness? Bring your own boxes, bags and tupperware from home and use the self-service scale to zero off the weight of any container you bring - sorted!

Food To Go - BYO Cups, Cutlery & Boxes
The food to go counter is a great opportunity for refilling, in ways you may not have thought of! The simplest is BYO coffee cups for hot drinks, and remember you can also put juices in a large reusable cup too. Consider investing in a reusable metal straw for smoothies that you can take with you which means you won’t need one of Planet Organic’s compostable straws either.

There are lots of reusable cutlery kits available at Planet Organic which are
really compact and easy to keep in your bag - using a reusable cutlery kit means cutting down on
even more compostable usage.

If you’re eating in one of Planet Organic’s cafes, you can use an enamel plate or bowl, just ask at the counter.

Planet Organic is a proud supporter of the City to Sea and Refill App’s campaigns for free water refills to be available across the country in a bid to slash the 8 billion bottles sold in the UK every year. All of our new summer salads are vegan, wheat-free and are made using fresh organic vegetables.

Chickpea Tabbouleh
Think couscous is reserved for gluten-eaters? Think again. We use chickpea flour gluten-free couscous and mix it with chopped peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes and an abundance of fresh parsley, mint and coriander before dressing with lemon juice and olive oil for a vibrant take on a classic tabbouleh.

Summer Pea Salad
This fresh garden pea, raw courgette, shaved fennel and celery salad is a celebration of all things summery, with plenty of parsley, lemon and garlic for added zing.

Heritage Tomatoes
Summertime means one thing: beautifully ripe British tomatoes. This salad celebrates just that, so it’s just chopped tomatoes dressed with a black olive and garlic oil to balance the natural sweetness and a sprinkling of china rose radish sprouts to finish.

CBD Tahini Carrots
This zingy salad is the perfect partner for anything in our mix and match section and helps up your CBD intake. We dress the shredded carrot with a CBD, lemon, maple and tahini dressing and garnish with hemp seeds and chopped coriander.

Quinoa and Kale
A marriage of crunchy kale, pomegranate, seasonal heritage tomatoes and three colours of quinoa, with creamy vegan mozzarella running through it.

Summer Slaw
This Asian-inspired slaw is zesty with coriander, chilli, lemon and ginger with plenty of crunch from grated butternut squash, white cabbage, carrot and courgette.

Coleslaw with Purple Carrot Mayo
Not your typical slaw, we dress the shredded red cabbage and white cabbage, carrots and spring onions with homemade vegan purple carrot mayo, made with purple carrot juice and apple cider vinegar.

Pickled Vegetables
We thinly slice white cabbage, carrot, cucumber and red pepper and quick-pickle it in white wine vinegar, Himalayan salt, coriander seeds, mustard seeds and cane sugar for a tangy, crunchy addition to your plate.

 0 Dreaming of a Good Night's Sleep? https://www.planetorganic.com/dreaming-of-a-good-nights-sleep/ https://www.planetorganic.com/dreaming-of-a-good-nights-sleep/#comments Mon, 29 Apr 2019 00:00:00 GMT Scentered https://www.planetorganic.com/dreaming-of-a-good-nights-sleep/
Balancing the demands of a busy lifestyle in today’s hectic, fast paced world can sometimes feel overwhelming, leaving little time for self-care. We seek new solutions to enhance our wellbeing, to allow ourselves to do more and feel better. We look to eat the right foods, exercise our body and mind, yet we often forget about the one tool we rely on every day: Sleep. There are many factors that contribute to a restful night’s sleep, so the aromatherapy experts at Scentered have put together the ultimate bedtime routine to help you wake feeling well rested.

Create a Sleep Space
Look around your bedroom and ask yourself whether you feel relaxed in this space. Are your blinds letting too much light in at night? Is the room stuffy or well ventilated? Would you sleep better with white noise, or less noise? Assessing these factors before you get into bed start you off on the right foot. Lighting our Scentered Sleep Well Therapy Candle an hour before bed will make the space feel as calming and relaxing as possible thanks to the essential oils of lavender, chamomile and palmarosa.

Reduce Screen Time
We all know the negative effect blue light and overstimulation from our phones and devices can have on our sleep quality. Try leaving your phone outside the bedroom and have a technology-free hour before bed. Replace this screen-time with reading or practicing some light yoga.

Use Aromatherapy to Associate Sleep with Scents
Once you’ve entered your technology-free hour before bedtime, apply our Sleep Well Therapy Balm to your pulse points. When we smell something, it triggers our olfactory nerve and sends a signal to our limbic system and the amygdala, the part of our brain that controls mood and memory. Certain associated smells can instantly impact mood and using this routine regularly will help associate the soothing scent of palmarosa, ylang ylang and lavender with sleep.

Breathe
Release tension and anxiety with deep and conscious breathing coupled with aromatherapy. Our Stop, Inhale and Reset technique is a great tool to use during the day too when you need a few moments to collect yourself.

1. STOP - Apply Scentered’s Sleep Well Balm onto your wrists, neck and temples

2. INHALE - Place your hands on your abdomen. Deeply inhale the therapeutic natural aromas.

Breath 1: Place your hands on your chest, fingertips touching and breathe into them. Feel your fingers part at the deepest part of the breath, exhale mindfully.

Breath 2: Move your hands to your tummy, breathe consciously and deeply fill your lungs, feeling movement beneath your hands.

Breath 3, place your hands onto the lower abdomen and inhale deeply into the whole body, pause, hold your breath here, then exhale as slowly and mindfully as you can.

3. RESET - Observe your calm breathing and relaxed body and mind.

Consider What You Drink
It might seem obvious, but here’s a friendly reminder: Cut the caffeine. Drinking too much caffeine throughout the day or too close to bedtime will have a negative impact on your sleep routine. Replace with herbal teas or water, especially in the afternoon.

Don't Hit Snooze
The average person completes five 90-minute sleep cycles per night and ideally, we wake up between these cycles, not in the middle of one. Being jolted aware by an alarm clock in the middle of REM (rapid eye movement, i.e. deep sleep) sleep cycle can leave you feeling sluggish but even if you're feeling tired, it's important not to hit the snooze button as this begins a new sleep cycle that will inevitably be broken when your alarm goes off again in ten minutes.

0 Fresh Blueberry Nut Balls https://www.planetorganic.com/fresh-blueberry-nut-balls/ https://www.planetorganic.com/fresh-blueberry-nut-balls/#comments Thurs, 25 Apr 2019 00:00:00 GMT Guest https://www.planetorganic.com/fresh-blueberry-nut-balls/ Quick and easy doesn't have to have to compromise on taste and nutrients! We certainly hadn't, until the pulse-experts at Hodmedod’s put them on our radar.
They’re like chickpeas but taste chestnutty and originate from northeast England. These carlin pea, carrot and flaked quinoa falafels are delicious for dinner and make amazing lunchbox fillers, for all the meal-preppers out there.

Ingredients:
2 carrots, roughly chopped
3 spring onions, roughly chopped
Handful of fresh coriander
120g dry Carlin Peas, soaked overnight in cold water
1 cup quinoa flakes or rolled oats
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp garam masala
1 tsp chilli flakes
1/2 tsp sea salt, to taste
Freshly milled black pepper, to taste
4 tbsp rapeseed oil or other oil for frying

Method:
1. First, rinse the soaked carlin peas, cover with fresh water and bring to the boil on the hob for 40 to 60 minutes, until tender. Drain and set aside.

2. Next, put the carrot and spring onion in the food processor and pulse a few times, then add in the carlin peas, coriander, spices and seasoning. Blend until everything is combined, leaving some texture.

3. Scoop the mix out of the food processor, then shape the mixture into 12 small flat patties.

4. Heat the oil in a large frying pan, then carefully place the falafels into the pan once the oil is hot. Fry on a medium heat for around 7 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure both sides are evenly browned.

5. Serve with a simple carrot, white cabbage and spring onion slaw, a quick sesame oil and tamari dressing and garnish with chopped coriander.

Top Tip

If you haven’t had time to soak the peas overnight, you can do a quick soak by boiling for 10 minutes on the hob then leaving to stand for an hour in the water. After an hour, drain and rinse, then bring to the boil again in fresh water for 40 to 60 minutes, until tender. 0 Zero Food Waste https://www.planetorganic.com/zerofoodwaste/ https://www.planetorganic.com/zerofoodwaste/#comments Thurs, 28 Feb 2019 00:00:00 GMT Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/zerofoodwaste/ Food waste is a problem.
It is the third largest contributor to climate change, but with so many people going hungry it also feels like, well, such a waste. Food waste is a problem.
It is the third largest contributor to climate change, but with so many people going hungry it also feels like, well, such a waste. That is why we are proud that all our stores are now Zero Edible Food Waste.
Like lots of retailers we work hard to reduce the amount of food that goes to waste in the first place, but as we sell a large range of fresh foods and serve 10,000 meals a week in our cafes there is inevitably some. To avoid it being thrown away, since 2017 we have been part of OLIO’s “Food Waste Heroes” programme.

At the end of every day we donate all our edible food to volunteers who redistribute it to the local community via OLIO, the food sharing revolution platform. It is a truly pioneering partnership and each month more than 5000 portions of perishable food now feed bellies in communities near all of our stores. The rescued food helps many people affected by hunger and food poverty.

OLIO Food Waste Hero, Amran Ali, has been picking up food from our Devonshire Square and Islington stores for seven months:-

“Volunteering at OLIO has strengthened my understanding of what it means to give back to the community. Since I started saving food from Planet Organic, I have shared my collections with over 100 people in my local area. Struggling single parents, the elderly, the disabled, the hungry & vulnerable; have all benefited from the surplus food.
