Can a particular environment heal or make you thrive in a way you didn’t think possible? Eminent Naturopath Rumana Zahn looks at how different spaces affect our health in the final part of her six zone Wellbeing Programme | Part 6 of 6
Pilgrims regularly walked spectacular routes for divine inspiration, these often being hills or mountainous areas away from the hustle and bustle of life. And often times we also seek such places to ‘find ourselves’ or ‘get away from it all’.
 
That’s why our environment is important. We can find ourselves being uplifted, comforted, calmed and inspired by a place. You don’t have to go to a tropical island to experience wonder or beauty we can experience this in the very environment we inhabit be it our home, work, a coffee shop, your local park.
 
If every day you look at your home and all you see and say is it’s tatty, horrible, full of clutter with laundry everywhere this is the environment that you have created for yourself and the thoughts you are experiencing right now in your space on a daily basis.
 
A lot of energy goes into not feeling pleased with your surroundings. Complaining thoughts and conversations take up energy. Putting up with things is fine if you’re ok with it, but not if you find yourself grumbling and never getting round to doing anything about them.
 
These repeating patterns of – thought, irritation, complaining - cumulatively take more than just energy. Clutter, for instance, affects us by making us feel disorganised and overwhelmed; disorganised spaces steal our precious time by us having to look for things; dirty places can be full of germs and make us ill, not forgetting the dusty places that affect our lungs.

Spending time creating environments in which we thrive is worth its weight in gold. It doesn’t matter if you’re working long hours or if you live in a tiny place, you can still make it work for you. 
 
In my practice I carefully take into consideration how patients exist in their space.  One client came to see me about her general health issues particularly losing weight. We discuss her sabotaging behaviours around food and her relationship with her meals. I asked her about how she ate and where she ate. She said the family never sat together because there was so much paperwork on the dining table she never got round to clearing it. She realised how this was affecting not only her eating patterns but the family dynamics. Every day she kept telling herself “oh I’ll sort it soon” never doing it until 3 years later. This may sound the simplest thing to do yet it is easy to create surroundings that limit us or get in the way of our flow.
 
Are you thriving or wilting?

 
The old Chinese art of Feng Shui recognised the importance of creating auspicious pleasing spaces which allows energy to flow positively within the environment.  You don’t have to be into feng shui to maximise your environment but learning from this ancient art can contribute and help in how we go about creating healthy homes and sustainable environments. The way you place things, the colour, its purpose, the way you flow through that environment all matter.
 
Be the Architect of your Own Space

 
If not feng shui, modern architecture and design offers much in the way of creating beautiful spaces. Why not be the architect of your own space? Look at what you can enhance and what creates in you a sense of peace and joy. Keep things very simple, it doesn’t have to cost the earth. Take a look at the list below and see where you can improve things. It just takes a few minutes to review and before you know it you may find you feel much happier and healthier as a result.
