Magnesium FAQs

What is magnesium?

Magnesium, also known as the miracle mineral, plays a vital role in over 300 enzymatic functions in the human body including promoting relaxation and preventing stress, anxiety, and low mood.

How does magnesium promote relaxation?

Magnesium regulates cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, to ensure that we have steady sleep-wake cycles and sustained energy throughout the day.

Magnesium also reduces glutamate, a stimulatory neurotransmitter, while increasing GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, to keep us calm and relaxed.

Why should I take a magnesium supplement?

Unfortunately, magnesium is depleted in our soil and food supply and thus many people are deficient despite eating magnesium-rich foods. Therefore, there are benefits to taking a magnesium supplement.

Which type of magnesium should I take for relaxation?

For magnesium to be absorbed and utilised by the body, it must be bound to a magnesium carrier. Examples of common magnesium carriers include glycinate, citrate, malate, threonate, oxide and chloride. The best magnesium carrier to support relaxation, however, is magnesium glycinate. This is because glycinate binds to glycine receptors in the brain, supporting mood and sleep.

What is the difference between magnesium glycinate and other forms of magnesium?

Magnesium gylcinate, also known as bisglycinate, is the best at supporting relaxation, mood, and sleep. Other forms of magnesium still support relaxation, mood, and sleep but offer other health benefits too. As an example, magnesium citrate is also good for energy, exercise, and digestion.
