Interview with Laura Riches & Laura Rosenberger, Co-founders of Laylo
What inspired you to start Laylo?
We love a glass of delicious wine. But often couldn’t justify opening a bottle because the wine would spoil after a couple of days.
The ‘eureka!’ moment came when we realised that amazing wine can be put into a box AND it stays fresh for 6 weeks. Who knew?!
The company went from an idea to an actual business after a moment of serendipity during the 2020 summer lockdown. We both independently had the idea to create a luxury boxed wine brand, but it was only a chance text exchange that revealed the coincidence.
It was a no-brainer to join forces - and Laylo was born.
How did you both meet?
We were colleagues at Naked Wines - Laura Riches was the Marketing Director and Laura Rosenberger was the COO. But by the time we started Laylo we were also great friends.
Why boxed wines – how are they better for the planet?
The design of glass wine bottles has barely changed in 200 years. But the amount of bottles and how we ship them around the world really has - and it has become unsustainable.
Glass bottles need temperatures over 1,500 degrees to create and are incredibly heavy to transport. In comparison, boxed wines are light, compact and generate 90% less carbon over their lifecycle.
Is it true Laylo can last for up to six weeks?
Yes, that’s right! They last for 6 weeks once open, so you can have the odd glass of delicious wine wherever you fancy.
Your boxes are so beautifully illustrated – can you tell us more about this?
Each of our designs is inspired the wine, the region it’s from and the winemaker’s personal story. The intention is that it’s a conversation starter - and something you can proudly display on your countertop.
What’s your number one piece of advice for other women looking to start their own business?
If you can, find a Co-founder! We’ve really valued working together… For a trusted opinion on difficult decisions, challenging the status quo and celebrating the wins!
